body work places

Post by Mike Usiskin »

Hi all, a local friend of mine sent me this email yesterday (he's yet to join I think)

"We’ve had a bit of an MOT disaster with the 2.2S. It’s failed on major rust to the underneath. I don’t really want to get it patched, so we’re facing the cost of getting the whole underside re-done (new floor panels, sills, kidney bowls, etc. etc.). Obviously, for a job like that we’ll need a specialist, but the prices being quoted by Autofarm and Export 56 are pretty scary. I just wondered if you knew any good Porsche bodywork folks."

I'll recommend Dr Barry, Alan.uk, Nick moss, Chriss turner, any one else? Also has anyone used a company called "Westons" based in Beckenham. I've not used them myself though another friend with an SC swears by them but before i recommend them I'd really like some other feedback if poss. Any other places he might try.

cheers

M

Thanks Mike !

Yup...it's a bit of a disaster underneath the car. But, as it's such a rare beastie, I want to make sure whoever does the bodywork knows the old cars well and has done a job on this scale before.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

PS - has anyone used Paul Conboy before ? A friend recommended him very highly, but he has a 993 and I guess they don't get a rusty as a 2.2S.

Hey Ian, glad you joined, Bootsy's having a baby so every little helps

There's a bloke on Turney Road with a gorgeous metallic green SC who rates this "Westons" but without another recommendation it's still a stab in the dark. All the others mentioned in the posting are 1st class in every way (apart from the occasional table manners  ) and Chris Turner looks after mine, (though I've not had any bodywork done since she's a concourse queen obviously)

I'd have no hesitation with any of the folk mentioned, though Dr Barry is probably booked until Christmas 2011, I mean, there's only so much one man and a hammer can do in a day

(editied) Also Andy Prill of course, some one said he was good

If there is any way to book a slot with Barry, then do it !
Take a look at the work he did on my car.

Looks like the Targa needed a lot of work there. Is it a rude question to ask how much all that work cost ?

I'd certainly recommend Sportwagen (http://www.sportwagen.co.uk/) in Shoeburyness and also Jim Wilkinson @ P3 in Charlton (07973 100123).

Do your research of the usual suspects in the south and then call The muddmeister, Andy Mudd at APM, in Bradford.

They have done an amazing selection of Porsches and are, pricewise, really middle of the road for a top job.

Mike

Chris Turner pointed me in the direction of Ricky Watts at RWR.

He has a great knowledge like the others mentioned of the early cars.

He did a similar job to my 2.2 which is nearing completion.

The Targa didn't need much work really other than back dating. If sold as a runner, you'd have described it as good condition , some minor bubbles to paintwork ! All the rest was underneath ! If you know you have rust issues, then expect worse. I can't remember all the details of the costs, but I still reckon it was cheap !! and the photo record I have is invaluable. All in, the painted shell stands me at ~£8k, including its orignial purchase.

I have to agree with Helen. Whilst I have not had body work done by Tuthills, I am due to collect my car from there tomorrow after an engine job and some rally preparation. I have seen their fabrication and paintwork both on rally and road cars first hand and their work is first class.
Wherever you go to get a first class job completed will be expensive but worth it in the long run.

Sounds odd but I will be taking my Pagoda to Classic Preservation, south of Brum

They know the Mercs and when I was in there had a couple of old 911s, in which - according to their website and the Paul who runs it - they also specialise

body work

Post by targa/red »

Just collect my 2.4S from Terry Allen who runs Porsche Curves Colchester Road,Coggeshall,Essex 01376 564001 after a bit of tidying up, but meet and saw some of Terry work at Andy Prill open day he also does the work on Max-page cars at a very resonable rate, as I drop the car of at Paint shield to have the front protected now its been re-painted the owner wanted the name and number for Terry as he had not seen a finish to the paint as good as this for a long time.
I would recomend Terry to any body but just see my car should enough
