DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

I know I posted something similar about 6mo ago but I can't find the thread anywhere (and I have tried searching ALL different ways..)

Anyway, this weekend will be the first that mrs smallspeed has not had to work for about 2 months so was thinking of taking her away somewhere nice for the weekend, so if anyone has any good ideas Im all ears..

I think last time someone sugested a nice gastropub/hotel place somewhere in the north, and a couple of others sugested places around the midlands.. We're quite into walking and being outdoors, aswell as shopping, so either a city we've not been to, or somewhere in the wilds. Nice deserted beach would be nice, but Im guessing the chances are slim!!

Any sugestions greatfully received

Nice empty beaches ... head upto Northumberland

we had a great week-end away visiting New Lanark, Scotland.
http://www.newlanark.org/ can recommend the walk along the river. to see the waterfalls.

we didn't stay at the hotel there as we felt it was to corperate instead we stayed in http://www.bw-cartlandbridgehotel.co.uk/
where the staff and food were fantastic.

I suppose it depends upon your budget. Personally I love the new forest, ( which is quite a long way from you ! )

first time I'd been, brilliant pub near Dorking in Surrey - superb food and great garden. Top marks from Mrs Disco.

Norfolk - The Victoria at Holkham or Titchwell Manor up the road a little... both lovely with excellent food and beaches to die for

Defnitely recommend the Victoria, stay in one of the follies, they're excellent.

Southwold Southwold Southwold....Fab beaches, quirky shops, always camped so no direct experience of hotels but have always fancied the Swan!

But seriously tho` and shamelessly jumping in, If Holkham is very nice and Southwold Southwold Southwold is very nice, what would it be like to drive between the two of them? I know nothing of the Norfolk/ Suffolk coast line. Is it a quiet area of the world? How are the roads? Is it pretty? And where abouts are those broads? I have a very vague memory of someone I know staying at a thatched place place called the Beehive and it looked great.

Must buy the boxed set of coast.

If you are VERY lucky you might get a cancellation at The Star Inn at Harome just outside of Helmsley. Great rooms and fabulous food. From there you have the North Yorks Moors for walking etc and the North Yorkshire Coast (Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Sandsend etc) for exploring/fossil hunting. www.thestaratharome.co.uk

The Feversham Arms at Helmsley is also a nice place to stay (and close to Harome) with spa etc. www.fevershamarmshotel.co.uk

You could always try www.peelcastle.co.uk if you are a fan of Grand Designs which opens up the Yorkshire Dales for great walks and drives

Alternatively just head for Leeds and stay at 42 The Calls, Malmaison or Quebecs. You have a great night life and restaurants as well as the ease of getting out the the Yorkshire Dales. If you were really adventurous you would find out where Thorner is and visit our Annual Beer Festival on Saturday afternoon - 22 firkins of the North's finest ales!

Sod it, just drive to Cornwall. You know you want to. Anywhere else is just second best.
