Just came across this very obscure test from the Top Gear magazine of its day, the hugely influencial ' Volkswagen Safer Motoring '

Peter Noad ( who I have always enjoyed reading his VW stuff ) has got the description of how a 2.4S engine behaves perfectly in that review

I've made it a sticky for a little bit of time, but as a rule don't like forums to have loads of stickies at the top. I suppose it might be a nice idea to have a sub section of the technical archive for this kind of stuff

It's probably just me that loves reading old road tests! I just think that they really put how special these cars were (are!) into perspective, and give you a great sense of how they were perceived way back when.

Don't know if you have already read it but interesting 1973 Carrera 2.7 V Lamborghini Urraco article from Car magazine. Interesting to me at least because I bought a used copy of this test 20 years ago before buying a Urraco which I kept for a few years. It was without doubt the most finely balanced and best handling car I have ever owned and felt like a go cart to drive. Amazing that you can still buy a decent example today for less than £ 15K.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and as with all supercar tests of that time, I remember first reading it. Isn't it funny with old road-tests how well we remember them? We may not have seen them for twenty or more years, but the moment you see the first picture, you remember it.

A few years later they did the same test against a Ferrari 308, and despite being fiercely pro-Ferrari in this instance, I grudgingly conceded their point about the superiority of the 911! Kudos on owning a Urraco!

Great motoring journalism has that power to evoke and instil in us a feeling of what it is like to actually experience something we haven't done. I can get nostalgic about a great write-up as if it was me that had done it originally!

Personally I don't read much journalism these days, mainly because I tire of post-modern ennui of the "...so we went up the Futa pass again, and quite frankly in this car it was boring..." kind of type. Don't want to know about you the writer, I want to know about the car and the experience and the road!

Thanks for both articles, and any others you can post I would love to read too. I appreciate your time and efforts.

Just finished reading both tests......I'm tearing up.....

Thanks very much for your efforts RichKaz, I really appreciate it! Where was the RS test from? I don't recognise it and I'm amazed that I've missed a modern RS test? This should read by all RS doubters!

....and the 911S test, written by Jenks too! Where are those hankies...I used to love Motor Sport when I was at school, still do.

Does anyone find it interesting that ,despite being UK publications, the first two tests have escaped being included in the Brooklands reprint series ?

The said tester was the famous Denis Jenkinson the late and past Motor Sport F1 contributor and friend of the famous. He was a noted eccentric and a brilliant journalist! As a writer myself (

I know) I am in awe of his taught prose! He was the Navigator for Sir Stirling Moss on their legendary 1955 win of the Mille Miglia in the Mercedes SLR. ( Can I say 'Mercedes' here?) He (?) invented a metal roller machine that had the whole MM on it in pace notes! Genius.
His writeup of that event should be required reading for all petrolheads of any persuasion, it is truly epic.
