Car is almost there.

I haven't realy been posting much about my restoration so I thought I would post some pics and tell the story so far.

I bought the car from a chap in Newport, Gwent.On the drive home It broke down Just outside of Stafford and had to be trailered all the way to Glasgow (it took 7 different flat bed recovery vans in a kind of motorway relay race).

Next day I was checking over everything again and all the electrics packed in.

Then my fathers trailer blew into my 914 in the high winds and chipped a 50p sized peice of paint and dented the wing.

Got the car back from the bodyshop a couple of days ago and have had the voltage regulator replaced to solve some of the elecrical probs i was having.

At the moment The 914 requires (as a matter of urgency):

1: A new driverside door hande (snapped today when i opened car after collecting it from the garage. I must have been too eager to enjoy the car after all its fettling . Runs NIIIIICE though )

2: Door check straps are completely goosed and the doors are flappier than a spaniels ears.

3: Relay for Headlights dip and mainbeam (car flutters its headlights at you)

4:Window winders

5: may require new front and rear shocks and bushes (correct tyres and pressures may solve some of the ride issues so will try first)


There are other odds and sods that need doing, but these are cosmetic or interior finnishings which can wait till the critical stuff has been sorted...............Apart from a new Prototipo steering wheel that is, thats a must

That is a very straight + nice looking fourteen. Looks like the (often fiddly to adjust) handbrake is working fine (bonus)
I bought new check-straps from a guy of 914club/world.com (think his name is Dave Sprinkle) and they are machined from new alu. Doors are now stiffer than a monk in a brothel and definitely wont flap in the wind. Dave's kit comes with new rollers also, one brass and one alu -stock ones were plastic

Think it cost about 30/40 quid or so for both sides

Car is in 1st gear.

Handbrake is almost there but needs more fettling.

Check straps are a major issue. Half of checkstrap hardware is missing so I need to source complete check straps. Will have to bite Bullet and call Rodger Bray as Mittelmotor have been messing me about.

Car will look even better when my Porsche side scripts finally arrive from the ddk online store

lovely car.. and they do look good with the logo down the side.. when i bought mine from Roger it looked like this



but, they were a tad crooked (i'm fussy) so for just £25 i got my local sign writter to replace them for me like this.

Helen -I'd love to see your car in some fuchs -reckon they'd suit well

I agree with fourteener on the fuchs. My wheel of choice - had some on a VW squareback in the early 90s. Scary expensive car that puppy at T3D eventually cut up & scrapped

I always wanted a 914, but now 'we' are 3, I persuaded The Boss that a 912 with the extra seats would serve as a family car

By the way, great colour too, and love the scottish VW decal in the rear window.

Logo is for the West of Scotland VW club.

No point hiding the cars heritage

Car may be a mongrel in many peoples eyes, but you gotta love em.

Just had EFI all tweaked and sorted, and now the car just wants to pull and keep pulling. Talk about giving your car some pep.

I think the minilites on Helen's car look pretty good. A nice alternative to Fuchs. (IMHO anyway)

Dont think mine was

Been ebay watching for that long now! Saw a similar car just over a year ago, but it needed a good bit of tlc at the time. Not sure what happened to it. Yours is looking pretty good. Look forward to seeing pics when you get the sidescripts.

Me too. Have ordered gulf decals as I may go down that route.
