Hmmm..
Does anyone know what Adrian Newey said happened?
Brake failure it looked like...very ironic for someone of his experience..
One of my many bizarre behaviours is to closely examine crashed race cars.
You will be shocked how many fatigue fractures are revealed by a decent crash, especially in Historics.
Moral..crack test Everthing..every year at least..
Wheel studs hubs axles and drive shafts are favourite..tho' I have never seen a Porsche one fail..yet..
I have seen calipers go, especially at their mounting ears, (I'd never race using old aluminium calipers..)..also brake pedals give from fatigue..revealed by the force of a frightened man of course..
Not things most would routinely crack test..
Kind regards
David

It does sound like something gave up big time.
He was following Ray Bellm in P2, they both braked for the second Mulsanne chicane and the GT suddenly snapped right and went into the side rails rear first, then down the road and straight through the tyre barriers at 180mph.
He brought the car back into the paddock after scrutineering on the Friday, we were in there at the time. I completely forgot he was running, looked around from taking a picture of a 911 and there was Adrian Newey 3 feet away in a GT40.

Just to add my bit, i was round the back of the pits and a blue GT40 came in on the back of a lorry, covered in a tarpaulin, apparently completely gutted by fire, they were very reluctant to let anyone see it. Anyone know whose car that was and what happened?
