I carry a spare cable in my 356 but not nuts (I need to correct that). I hope never to need it. Nice fix chaps

When I sent Jo the photos , the first thing she said was .. “ so that’s where my rug went, I was looking for that “ !


Also to add… I did know the cable was possibly going to be an issue before I set off , but thought I’d get away with not having to change it … pics from the day before I set off …. Could only see the fray when I moved the bellows back …. Turned out the damage must have been well into the conduit so it wasn’t visible but the frayed wire I could see was a smoking gun… it lasted for about 1200km’s …..lesson here is don’t defer maintenance

Thanks to all for the constant updates! If Tapatalk had a little like button, I would have liked all of the photos. Kicking myself I wasn’t there this year although I am sure discussions at Ddk weekend 2 will quickly turn to the next classic Le Mans trip … whether that is 2027,… Or even 2026!

I think the lesson learned here is that everybody needs a comprehensive spares package … including a range nuts and bolts !

Pig ugly is what comes to mind... Just stick with the traditional styling (and wheels). This is a horrid thing fresh from Horrible-land. Ugh.

Well Laid Plans....
Nine of us in an ancient Manoir had a very enjoyable time. The Manoir is in the middle of nowhere and absolutely wonderful. The plan was to leave on Monday after CLM and travel northwards to Honfleur for two nights in a hotel. On packing up on Monday in readiness to leave my passport had gone awol. I have had a passport since the mid 1960s and never lost one. Always a first time. It is possible to apply for a temporary passport on line and collect from Paris, Bordeux or Marseilles.
Originally I was to get home and do a rapid turn around for a flight to join up with SWMBO AKA Mrs Cuddles in Cannes for a few days before getting back to the UK for DDK 2 meet. The temporary passport lasts for one trip out of France. So flying back for a holiday was out of the question. Bright idea! Not. Travel down to Cannes in my 1970 2.2 S. Only 746 miles. Collect temporary passport in Marseilles only a 2 hour train ride from Cannes. Simple.
Decide to travel as much as possible on motorway. The little device on the windscreen taking care of the tolls. Starts to rain and does not stop for 400+ miles. Hundreds of trucks creating mountains of spray. French truck drivers are knights of the road begining with a capital "C". I say this because you can just get the nose of your car level with their rear wheels and they indicate and pull out. Nowhere to go on the two lane motorway except back off and hope in the spray you don't lose it. Another phenomenon with respect to French drivers is their amazing powers of sight. A line of trucks, heavy rain and masses of spray. Contemplate edging past at 58mph when WAAANG a four door Porsche blasts past at warp speed.
I thought the UK was the world leader in setting out cones on motorways whilst there is no work actually taking place. We have lost our crown! A conservative estimate on my little jaunt was a good 90 miles of cones reducing two lanes to one. Thus buggering up any overtaking and restricting the speed to those of the copious number of trucks.
Fortunately the windscreen wipers on the S are not bad. Two speeds and intermittent setting meant I was not dicing with death at 70mph in the pouring rain. There were occasions
, just south of Lyon, when the rain was so heavy and the spray so great I thought it was an accident waiting to happen. Fortunately I did have a spare pare of clean underpants. ( Yes Stretch clean I am not of the " turn them inside out" school.) The rain did stop but I had a wind issue. No not from last night's curry which was very nice indeed.Thank you lads. It is the Mistral an annual event of hot winds, OK the curry did produce some, but cross winds I don't do. The Mistral instigated some interesting lane changes without any inputs on the steering wheel. Earlier the weather gods were taking the
...... now inflicting decidedly strong wind.
The constant thought was would the car break down or would I run out of fuel. And given my advancing years would the water pressure determine more stops than necessary? Decided to work down to a half full tank then get fuel. The first fuel stop: had to wait what seemed like hours to get on to the pump. A lady with a small Renault was putting fuel in her vehicle a teaspoon at a time. To be continued.

Bumpstart Dave (ChesterJLampwick) has posted on IB, his thanks to the DDK crew who helped with his starter issuettes, to those who offered advice or lent tools, and to Barry for showing him the voltage drop rather than resistance checking of earth leads.
Other than a blown fuse (windows and sunroof) making toll booths awkward and sunburn on his pate, he got home without further issue.
