Yes truly impressive stuff and for me Jaguar is a brand with history and heritage that we should be truly proud of

Our genial host, Paul Raynes, has said that if others DDKers would like to come on another tour next year, he would be only too pleased to arrange this - hopefully the photos will whet the appetite!

What a great day, very impressed with the place. The store room was just full of all sorts of special/rare cars. Great to put a few names to faces and have time to talk rubbish for a bit. Thanks again to Matteo for organising, very grateful!

Thanks Matt for organising, the staff are super friendly and the set up is definitely impressive… Great to catch up with all you guys some new faces I think we all enjoyed ourselves…And as for the car collection in the back warehouse like and say and I’m sure we all thought was …..wow

But

Personally I was disappointed with the quality of the restoration work of the E types… I don’t know exactly what their labour charges are but they will be expensive and I know from other sources that when sold Jaguar I’m trying to get north of £200,000 per car… For me that should mean that there is a high level of originality
I know it’s bordering on semi anorak territory but no effort was made to use original fixings which are part of the character of every Jaguar using additional GKN or BEES bolts …. All highly visible in the engine compartment …and one of the true icons of a Jaguar E type in the cockpit is the growler which is the horn push. Original growlers have a warm golden hue and an Ivory soft white colour to the chequerboard pattern… All reproductions are bright gold and a much brighter white… It’s a small detail but it sums up a big use of reproduction parts which was evident on the cars… Despite our super friendly host of the day stating that Jaguar only use original or OEM parts… I’ve heard this before about their body shells and it just simply isn’t true

So perfectly good cars are being restored to a less standard than they could’ve been

Our guide said their labour rate is £150 ph plus VAT which I didn’t think was too bad all things considered (my local OPC charges £180 + VAT)
One of the E Types is the foyer was £274,950

Fantastic trip, thanks to Matt for organising. Very enjoyable way to spend 3 hours or so. Weirdly I found myself more attracted to the Landrover side of things as most of their builds are traditional hot rod style, shoehorning a modern jlr 5.0 v8 with zf autobox into a traditional defender chassis. These builds were impressive and high quality. We could t take any photos of the workshop unfortunately

Unfortunately Jonathan, it's not unique to Jaguar - many 'high end' restorations from Porsche, Ferrari, etc 'specialists' resort to the same tactics ... raiding the parts bins rather than tracking down NOS items.

All these 'heritage' restoration departments should employ people whose sole remit is to scour the globe - including outside the internet - in order to find (& then buy/put into storage) those NOS parts.

Unfortunately I think many (most) of the buyers for these sorts of cars have no idea which parts are correct & which are not ...

We miss our 300tdi when we see one until we remember it ran like a tractor, was always cold and often broke!
