The next stage was to get the bare metal protected properly, the remaining mechanical parts were removed and the shell mounted to our rotisserie







We cleaned down the metal and removed any small areas of paint that were left but ensured the original lead work remained intact.



We use a Glasurit Epoxy as a first stage over the metal.







The underside retains most of the original factory smaller and with no evidence of corrosion or failure of the sealer we decided to leave in in place and just give it a good clean.



And also a coat of epoxy to seal off the old product from the new that is to come.

So as mentioned above, the rear bumper setup was "interesting" and destined to become wall art.

We bought new RS panels, however the flare wasn't quite enough for those arches se we cut into the new panels and added some metal.





And welded up the trim holes

Great history, achingly cool car, cracking resto....the stuff of many of our dreams and I hope it gets used and appropriately abused!

The next job on the list was to install a front mount intercooler. The car had an under wing cooler already but since is was wearing an RS front bumper we decided to move the oil cooler there.

The opening was cut out



And the duct hand made.



A double pass cooler trial fitted



And the duct welded in place



With the welding finished the anti-stonechip coating was applied on the underside of the panels.





And the underside painted in it's original silver ( although the car wouldn't have been this thoroughly painted on the underside at the factory.) This car will be used so the more protection the better.

The fibreglass panels needed a little work to get them ripple and pinhole free.





And final prep on the shell started.

Didn’t fancy the more shaped and rounded factory look for the oil cooler cut out Jon?

Fantastic work as always Jon, car looks superb!

And so begins a more complicated paint application than usual.

First the car receives a coat of wet on wet primer to ensure the base is all one colour.





The owner requested that the car have racing roundels placed in the same location as the car originally had it’s race numbers. We also decided that these should be painted on under the lacquer and have a smooth finish.

First we did a number of test runs on an old door skin to try out the masking and the colour.







Having decided on the brighter white we applied this in base coat to the areas on the car which would have the roundels









And then applied the mask.







Then start with a dust of the sliver around all the edges, a wet coat could cause it to bleed under the mask.



Followed by several more full coats.









The mask is then peeled off (a nerve racking job)

Et Voila..

Well, that looks a bit of alright!
