Re: DDK Northern Weekend - 15th / 16th / 17th Sept - DETAILS
Right ... not long now !!! Lets hope the weather is kind so you can see the amazing countryside you'll be driving though
.. and lets hope the tourists aren't out blocking the roads at 40 mph
Just about got routes sorted for both days , hope you all like driving. 143 miles on the Saturday might not sound like much, but you'll 'drive' each mile
A few pre event points :
FILL UP YOUR CAR WITH FUEL !!! so it is full for the start of both Saturday & Sunday .. Leyburn is the closest .
If you have a sat nav .. bring it. The routes are fairly easy to plot using a few key villages.
If you have a National Trust card .. bring it , as the last stop on the Saturday is a NT place and well worth spending abit of time at , even if its just to stretch your legs & get a bit of exercise pre Sat night dinner .
For the routes , dont feel like you have to stick with others . Some wont have partners in their cars telling them to slow down
some will want to enjoy the roads , others will want to stop at some of the villages / towns we pass through . Do whatever you want, Its meant to be a relaxed weekend.
Watch out for camera vans ... we are using popular biker routes. The Vans are hightop silver things , look a bit like campers + they also have little transit connect type vans where the operator stands with a gun on a tripod ....
The Sheep tend to get out of the way
PUNCH BOWL people : You need to book the taxi to & from the CB .... Peter Ellerton’s number for a taxi is 01748 884775
Basic outline plan :
Friday eve : Meet at the CB. The CB are expecting most of us to be eating, but as people will be arriving at different times, just sort this yourselves. I'll be in the bar
Sat : 9:30 / 10am - Leave CB car park on the 'Dales' drive
evening meal , meet 7:30 pm
Sunday : 10am ( ish ) - Leave on the 'Big country' drive ... this wil be finished by approx 2pm , giving people the chance to either head off to do their own things or giving those who travelled a long way, an opportunity to get back
I'll post more info as I remember it

Thanks for the details James - shaping up to be a great weekend
I'll have the engine in the wrong end for this trip - we'll be in the 968, because my 911 gearbox is cracked at the input shaft bearing tube. Subjected to excessive torque, perhaps?
Mikey B is currently on the case, so to speak, but it will be a few more weeks yet I suspect.

Re: DDK Northern Weekend - 15th / 16th / 17th Sept - DETAILS
I'm travelling up from London. I have a choice of A1 all the way or M1 / A1, any recommendations on what route to take?
There's normally road works on the M1 so thought it might be quicker.
If I get to my destination early enough I am hoping to go for a blast around the area if anyone fancies joining me.

The problem you have with the A1 is the volume of lorries on it when it's two lanes. And their constant overtaking of each other. M1 will be quicker and less frustrating but there's always average speed roadworks for a good portion and usually more accidents. You make your choice and take your chances really. Flip of a coin...

I chose the A1 over the M1 yesterday and it was a hassle free trip, the odd lorry in the way but I'd take that over roadworks any day.

I always choose the A1 if I can ... at least there are escape routes if traffic blocks unlike the shithole called the M1

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FUEL IN THE CAR FOR SAT & SUN MORNING
For those of you travelling up the A1 .. you might find your satnavs are out of date ...
The A1 is now 3 lanes all the way from ferrybridge .
You need to come off at Northallerton / Bedale exit of the A1M which slightly further up than the old junction.
There is now a new bypass around bedale which is the 2nd junction off the roundabout .... take this and head to Leyburn.
SAT NAV PLOTS FROM THE A1 .. this is the best way & drops you over the moor ( fun in the dark !

Leyburn
Grinton
