I still think I should buy one - what are they like to own/drive/maintain etc etc - I'm on a corporate driving day in a Murcielargo next month so after that I'm sure it won't take much to push me over the edge and finally buy one !

Don't let me stop you !
These cars have rock solid construction with a very firm and positive ride. The 3.5 litre quad cam V8 engines are creamy and very very torquey. 50-70mph in top takes just 6.1 secs. They are beautifully balanced with typical mid engine predictable handling. Removing the targa roof takes two - but its well worth the effort !
After slotting the metal top behind the seats you need to find a nice long tunnel ( Hatfield was good ). Wind down the windows , select 3rd gear hit the loud pedal and ---------------- Wooooooooooooooosh  all hell breaks loose.
If that doesn't mesmerize you please pull up a.s.a.p ---- I'm afraid to inform you that you're clinically dead !
When looking at any V8 Lambo you MUST check that the sodium filled exhaust valves have been replaced with soild valves. Or " How lucky do you feel today "
Specialist servicing costs are similar to Porsche.
Some of the the last 1988 cars had wonderful looking and shockingly expensive Silhouette teledial 15" wheels which are shod at the back with 285 section Pirelli P7 rubber. The standard factory flat faced 16" wheels are better suited to the cars dynamics and don't 'tramline' like the teledials. Jalpa's look so much better in the metal. Much lower and wider than pictures suggest.
Expect to pay between £ 25 - 30K for the best cars.
If you want more info I can PM the complete 1983 Motor road test

I also have Steve Cropley's 'Car' first test
