Unfortunately a LHD-to-RHD conversion does not fall within the five points generated by an unmodified monocoque or unitary body. A similar question has been raised regarding Morris minor convertible conversions, carried out using factory-spec parts. Although the end result is identical to an original factory-built car, because the chassis number tells a different story, it won't be accepted.

Regarding 'the question', it would appear that you will be asked if your vehicle is eligible for exemption from MOT.

At least I know I'm heading for IVA and can get prepared and done before the question is asked when the tax is due in 12 months time.
Might take it to one of the specialists who will 'pre-IVA' a vehicle. Could save a lot of time and generate a To Do List.

On a related note, anyone know if the 73T chassis number has a # for LHD or RHD please?
The V5 has no slot for LHD or RHD that I can see.

At least this has taken the doubt out of my particular case.

Maybe I am the only one on DDK with a sure fire Significantly Modded early 911!

I doubt the number is specific in that regard (unlike odd and even part numbers), but your number will be specific to a LHD car on factory records.

But seriously, going back to the original 8 point system, you need 8 or more. Unless I am being particularly dim;

Transaxle 4 points
Suspension 2 points
Steering 2 points

So the 8 total surely means you can run a RHD conversion and a non standard engine, as long as everything else is period. Appreciate some of the above might have been enhanced, replaced, uprated etc, but surely the same design, type, mounting points etc all counts.......



Or am I missing something really obvious?

Any idea when the DVLA will be issuing those guidelines?

When I set out on this car I had no idea there was a points system and I was never told about it either when I changed the engine several times.
I probably told them about the RHD conversion to but that was in Xmas 1991 so any record DVLA might have will be lost in a filing cabinet in landfill by now.

Yes, just the two of us Wayne, the rest are playing at it!

Of the 8 minimum, 5 must come from the shell @ 5 if stock.

Ours are not, so we loose the 5, thus if everything else is stock you can't reach the min 8.
This is why the definition of Modified is so important in the 'Question', and as Keith has said it will be asked in a way that the owner has to declare any changes unless they are blissfully ignorant, never been told of the mod or lying.

So is it the case that a car deemed to be a 'Q' plate, can't use a personal plate?

Once a car is given a Q it cannot be changed because that would be masking the truth about a car.

Not sure how Q's are given, Q 123 ABC? or Q 911POR, the latter could be good!
Maybe you can buy a nice personal Q from those nice DVLA people? New profit stream!

Is there any reason why you guys can't change the taxation class of your cars back to PLG now, and avoid all the grief?

Can a classic be called such a thing? I would think DVLA have thought of every loophole possible?

Sadly it wouldn't matter even if you were given that option (which you're not) - the same 8-point rules apply either way.

Q-plates are currently issued on a random basis but I agree, I wouldn't be surprised if the option to buy your own might suddenly appear as a revenue source...

It won't be when you come to tax it next year, though. Due to its age, you'll automatically be drawn into the new system.

Sunroof delete? The roof is part of the structure of the car, and not as left the factory.
