I've been under my 911 which I re-built in 88 very recently, and some of the repairs I did were quite good and most are lamentable.
Standards of workmanship are raised by such as Barry, and soon i will have to re-build again my shell. That will be the time to re-do some of my 'MoT' repairs.(ie you CAN see the joins, so easy to cut it all out!)

Repairs to the rear.....Barry wheeled up a repair section for the rear inner wing top area and then welded that it.










The rear end needed to be jacked to the right height before the old slam panel was cut out. With the rear end aligned, it could be cross-braced before cutting out the rear slam panel. After that everything was put back together again with some finishing off to the last part of the nearside inner wing, plus a general tidy-up.

Yes, slight time lag.....Barry is quick but not that quick! (the photos so far represent progress up to about early December of last year).

By the way the bits I sourced off of you did come in very handy...all will be revealed soon!

Next Barry moved onto some front end repairs. The tank support panel was backdated to '72 style. The old battery area was removed and a new part fabricated to form the new shape.

The slight distortion to the bulkhead was also removed as far as possible.

I will admit to being very pleased with that little dented area though. Can't for the life of me figure out what could have happened there? Anyway, I tried to get the shape back on the car, but it was no good, the dent rods just couldn't even start to move it, and I was beginning to put tiny 'outies' (outward dents) in it.

With it on the bench though, I was able to work the dent inside-out with a nylon drift (doesn't stretch the metal further). After that, it was a case of floating the metal back downwards into the correct shape, and weld it back in. It's still my favourite part of the car, silly as it might sound. Just was a lovely metalwork excercise.

As for the car itself, although it does look pretty challenging in the opening photographs, it has a couple of very good points: droopy tail aside, it's arrow straight. The other huge advantage is that it's never been welded. This makes my job very much easier. All in all, so far it's been a rather good project ....

More front end work....a new area of front wing ahead of the battery boxes was fabricated for each side, and welded in. Two new bumper mounts were also made and fitted. The position of each was checked with a plumb-bob against measurements and marks down on the jig.

The new chassis leg for the nearside is forward dated from the factory to suit later cars, a process that Barry reversed again by removing the factory mod, fabricating a new part, and welding into place.

On the other side, a new base for the corroded chassis leg was welded in, and the area of the battery strap's captive nut replaced, complete with new nut.
