I took it for drive today, not quite as far as one of your Wales trips Gary.....
Sorted one little oil leak, but there is still one which will require the engine out and tin ware off.....doh!

Its been a while since my last confession,
I hadn't touched the old jallopy since last year, mainly because I had another hand operation on my other hand. Obviously I needed that to heal before any major surgery could happen on the car. Major surgery, I hear you ask,  but you've just rebuilt the engine......
There was an oil leak still, and its origins pointed toward engine out diagnosis.
I waited 2 months for the recovery of my hand then had complications, so it was the end of April when I felt I had just enough strength in the hand to be able to work in the garage.
Upon entering the garage and inspecting the car I found the winter had been cruel to my nice clean engine. I had neglected to think of the surface treatment of the metal parts I had wire wheeled and deep cleaned.  Maybe I should leave the oil dripping to cover the engine in a protective film.

I found a treatment they use on motorbikes called X CP ,spray on and wipe down the excess. Needs doing once a year apparently. 

So far seems quite effective. It immediately took away the white powder from the carburettor bodies.

I got the engine out and onto the stand and stripped away the tinware.

I drained all the oil, as it has done 504 miles now so new filters and oil required, along with checking the tappets.

Straight away it looked like oil coming from the fuel pump.  I hadn't replaced the seal when rebuilding it so I got one from my lovely selection box of seals, another good old Lidl purchase.

Got that on and took a couple  of third piece nuts off and added more thread lock as they looked like they had let a little oil out too.

No trace of oil from the new pulley seal, which was pleasing.

There was no sign of oil from the cooler area either. Or the temperature sender.

With the engine turned on its side I was able to to see that the oil on top of the pushrod tubes was originating from between the head and the barrel.

So, head off, barrels off and grinding paste out. I guess I should have lapped them in the first place.
With a nice ring ground around the mating surface of the head, I refitted it all back together. This time I torqued both heads to a higher spec. Hopefully it won't leak now!

Reset the tappets and the timing and then wire wheeled most of the parts that had rusted and then covered everything in XCP.

Engine back in, connect everything back up with a mouth full of fuel to get it up the line.  Oil in and turn over with no ignition to get the oil pressure up. A quick fast charge of the battery and fire up checking for leaks..........none yet, but that was also the case when I first rebuilt it.  So I need a few more longer test runs to guarantee there are no leaks.

Little update.
Took the car for a test run, the other day and all seemed fine.
But by the time I got home the engine was popping back up through the carbs a lot on the over run.
I thought it must be the exhaust and put some paste around the pipes where the slip into one another. No leaks at the head area, all nice and tight there.




When I went to tighten the clamps, one broke so I put the original style ones back on, but I over tightened one of those and stripped a thread, so then it wouldn't even come undone.
So I had to grind that nut off and re do it.

Once a got the exhaust on I went for another test drive, only this time it wasn't running well at all..... running on 3 cylinders only.

Got back and decided to look at the spark plugs, and on reaching for number one plug, I discovered the lead wasn't even attached, woo hoo ,easy fix.

Went for a test run to Weedon depot on Sunday , to see if I could see Neil Bardsley but no luck and the car was popping a little still.

So I reset all the idle screws with flow meter on top and that seems to have cured it, fingers crossed.
