I had set the carbs up on my bench and they have been great with out any adjustment. Once warmed up though, it idles too high at 1500rpm , even after playing with the Idle adjustment screws, and the stops not making contact at all. So I bought a fuel level dial P78 tool and checked the float levels, but they are bang on. My deduction is that the throttle bodies are worn and I either need to get them bored oversize with new butterfly's or buy new carbs, the Chinese copies!
Does any one know of, or had any experience with, any companies that re-bore throttle bodies and put in new butterfly's.

Have you checked the ignition timing?

I haven't Sean.
It's just staticlaly timed.
But I'm fairly certain about the throttle s because when I was refurbishing them, when i looked through them whilst they were closed, I could see too much light around the butterfly s. Was hoping i could get away with it.
I'll have a look at the timing and am considering putting that 123 distributor on it that I bought off you.

Chinese copies work well and are much cheaper.

Were you running these carbs before the re-build? If they weren't idling high then, I'd suspect something else

Have you disconnected the linkage with the engine running to check no tension?

Butterfly's closing properly? Think you can adjust on these carbs

Distributor springs / weights operating correctly?

Check for intake air-leaks with carb cleaner

Thanks Neil and Hugo. I think the Idle was starting to ride high before I took it apart, but it was so long ago now I can't quite remember!
I've been reading the articles on 356 registry about the Chinese carbs, which is why I'm thinking it will be my simplest and cheapest option.
I've done the rod disconnect, and the distributor springs are good. If the rest of the car is any thing to go by, its not surprising the carbs are worn out.
Nearly there........ and then there will be something else to do, like the steering, or the rear bushes.
All fun, isn't it.

Put the 123 distributor on in the first instance. Your distributor may be hanging up or to advanced. The sliding pads fall apart for fun. I could never get a decent idle until I put the 123 on and timed it at 5 degrees. The advance was spot on.

Not had time to tinker with the car lately, having been in the family holiday. But I ordered a pair of Chinese Sole p11 40 copies. I knew that they would need some proper preparation, but when they turned up, one was badly damaged, so no new carbs for the big DDK weekend

Update time, as its been a little while since last posting. I got my money back for the broken carbs, it wasn't easy but showing some patience helped. My next step was to try my second hand pre programmed 123 distributor. Got it in, timed it up and took it for a spin. Great, the Idle when hot was coming down below the 1500rpm I was seeing before, but, there was a misfire higher up the rev range when driving. So I swapped the advance curve selection switch, but still a misfire, just at a deferent rev.
I decided to rebuild my old 022 distributor again but more thoroughly this time. Upon inspection you can see more worn out pins and parts, so I swapped them for less worn parts from a spare I had. I bought a new sliding plate where the weights move on as they had grooves in. And polished the oval feet on the underside of the weights to aid the sliding of the weights back to the centre.

I even cut my own felt disc to fit in the hole under where the rotor sits. This is oiled to keep the distributor lubricated.
My little tip for when playing around at the back end, wear protection, or you'll get messy trousers.





This was all to no avail though, as the car would still not return to an acceptable low level of revs.

So there was only one thing for it.....
Buy a brand new Bluetooth 123 distributor.
You do have to be careful with the wiring out of the distributor hitting the oil line, but mine just misses.
I got a curve off the 356 registry, downloaded the app, wrote the curve onto my distributor on my phone app and viola!
F - ing bloody brilliant.
It idles low, pulls so smoothly and no misfire up high.







And just to reward me for all the hard work I put into this car, it developed a little oil leak.
Grrrrrrrr. A winter project then.

But it drives ever so nicely now.
Can't wait for better weather again.
