So I've got a question from Ross who is doing the work:

"What do people do about removing the wiring loom.....does anyone split it in the tunnel for example?"

I pulled mine out backwards, but it was a right royal pin in the ar5e getting the connectors over the torsion bar tube. IIRC, I may have had to de-pin some connectors.

It comes out from the back. It’s not easy, and giving the seat pan a gentle upwards encouragement with a rubber hammer above the torsion bar helps to get it out

Those pictures bring back memories!
One of mine had the sills brazed on and the floor was made of road signs riveted to rust!

Good to have a new restoration thread on here to follow. (I am useless at keeping a thread going as I am more of a “just get the work done and document it after” and then “Oh I forgot to take pictures” person)

So Kit is just about starkers now, Ross is going to build an internal frame work and move her on to another rotisserie to let him remove all the suspension..

Did you keep the road signs that used to be the floor

So we are pretty sure that the sunroof is a non-standard retro fit. Next question!

"I see what looks like Tig brazing at the front section. If anyone has a stock sunroof model stripped I would like to see how the inner cassette for the roof is attached. I may have to peel ack the folded section at the rear.....that will be a nightmare, but the rust on the frame and in the roof makes me want to remove it."

If the sunroof was an original feature (factory) there would be drain tubes and exit holes for sunroof water drainage.
From the very first picture on this thread there do not appear to be any exit holes (unless they have been painted over at some point) which would suggest it might be a later retro fit.

Also, the factory would not weld onto a painted shell as those gas welds seem to suggest, at least to me.

This is a drg off Design911's web site. It shows the sunroof as a module, we used to call them 'cassettes' from the Rockwell Golde factory we had near Frankfurt in the late 80's.

The drg shows the 'tray' of the cassette in light line which suggests to me the cars were welded up before paint with the base welded into the roof structure. The sunroof mechanism etc all fitted after paint.
The drg is of a late 80's 911, possibly an SC or 3.2.

At the very rear of the cassette would be the 2 drain tubes to feed to the holes/tubes in the corners of the shell by the engine lid as Mike refers to, the drg shows 4 drain tubes.

I believe the car's roof lining had a zip in it for access to the motors etc for any repairs.

I have never seen an early 911 sunroof, just my opinion on the drgs, you could do with a call to Barry Carter to ask his advice from his massive experience of these early car's bodyworks.
