Could be that current draw with LED side/brake lights is below the 'wetting current' level necessary to overcome dirt and oxidation on switch contacts. Not an issue with good old filament bulbs because the current is much higher. Also, a filament has lower resistance when cold so briefly draws higher current at switch on that further helps break through contact surface grime. Or maybe I'm talking rubbish.
