Cheers Roy,

The starter went to Broadway with the original (burnt out) solenoid. Rob fitted an unbranded 6 volt solenoid as part of the re-build - they use this on all their current customer re-builds and have not had a problem with them in the past. He's not sure where they are made.

The re-built starter tested fine on their rig, but I don't think this is a perfect test as it does not replicate the thinner wires (and lower amperage) in the activation (ignition switch) circuit.

I have a new bushing for the bell-housing but haven't yet replaced it as Dick's suggestion to look at the solenoid made sense; the solenoid being one of the few variables from starter working to not working and I wanted to change one thing at a time so I knew whether it had made a difference.

Thanks Hugo that now makes sense to me. If the motor works well hot or cold I would leave the bushing for a while. When I took my old one out the wear was very little against the new one. Time does give you the chance to evaluate each item.
