The rear end and rest of the car has been checked and has been given a clean bill of health fortunately. I can only assume that when the car was restored that they considered the front end good enough and focused on the rest of the car. Hopefully I will have no more nasty surprises.

Whilst it's painful now, it will feel good to know it's been sorted properly.

Good luck with the repairs. And although it might be tempting to stop digging, my advice would be to poke around everything else as thoroughly as possible. Need to know where you stand, and it's the only way to full peace of mind longer-term!

Slightly off topic, but whilst my car is being dealt with and I have no Porsche related projects to do other than accumulating a few parts, I decided to give the garage a lick of paint.

I need to get the garage floor repainted with some form of epoxy paint. If anyone has any recommendations of a company that does this in Surrey I'd be interested to hear from you.

If you are the type to remove engines regularly (etc) you may regret any floor paint as the high almost pin-point loading of jack wheels moving over the surface might rupture the paint and it will flake.
Lots of us have suffered this over the years in a busy DIY maintenance garage.
In the end I bought plastic hard tiles and did the whole floor. Has been perfect.

please forgive the car content, but I couldn't find a decent picture of the floor!
The system can be trimmed along the edge with a tapered strip allowing very smooth rolling 'in-n-out' of the car.
The green area ia just some plastic sheet laid down to stop too much dirt onto the floor during a motorcycle restoration.

My 2 x car garage cost about £650 iirc, DIY install done in 1/2 a day tops.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into tiles. However, my floor has a slight curve by the entrance, so isn't completely smooth or flat.... Your car pic is much more interesting than my garage floor.

A lot of the 1/2 day to cover it was spent chipping off bits of the concrete floor left by the builders and the generally rough builders finish.
I swept is so much I now have an A Level in sweeping...
As ever, preparation is everything.
Well worth it BUT I am now so very careful about marking the floor where before I really did not bother.

Latest update.... My car is currently waiting for a slot on the jig.

Whilst waiting for time on the jig, i had this made up. As my car has a 70 oil tank with a threaded output and a 79engine with a suction fitting, the connection between the two types of hoses had a small leak. Enough for a couple of drops of oil to run down the pipe and vapourise on contact with the oil cooler, or drip onto the heat exchanger, creating a cloud of oil smoke. I hope this fixes the problem.

Its on the jig. My 'new' S front bumper arrived (Thanks Tony). I hope my front end restoration will look as good as Richard's once its finished. Its good to see all the backdating that Barry is doing on his car, so i am using it as a reference to make sure my replacement pa els are also correctly backdated.

Work is continuing. My car has now been pulled straight. It was about 4mm out of true.

The left inner wing doesn't look too bad in places, so is having a few repair panels fitted, although the front part will be replaced.



The right hand side is in worse shape and shows signs of previous accident damage.


Both battery boxes will be replaced



Although the full extent of the rot is being revealed around the petrol tank...

What is that rusty panel actually called. My 912 had this recently done by Max at revival. God news for you, mine was 4 million times worse than yours. Suspension pickups rusted out completely. Failed ON THE WAY TO THE MOT CENTRE. I would have had no idea otherwise. Scary. Lovely car BTW.

Dansk call it the front floor, but there are various repair panels with or without the suspension mounts.

Looks like the damage to my in er wings is worse tha. Initially suspected. Hard to see from the photos, but it looks like new inner wings will be needed. I hipe my problems end there.

I popped down to Carrera Performance in Horsham on Thursday to see the extent of the problems.

The right wing has had many many previous repairs. Starting with the tops..


and the front


and the bottom


So given that it had accident damage which has made one of the jig points 4mm out of true, we have decided that replacing, rather than repairing the right inner wing will give a better and safer result.

Left inner wing is rotten at the front




so just the front section will be replaced

Meanwhile the car has been relieved of its engine, gearbox and suspension so it can be checked for alignment on the jig.


Tim, the panel beater, checked the rest of the car and showed me where other repairs had been done. There are signs of other repairs on the rear inner wings, but they have been done to a high standard, so I hope my problems are limited to the front end.

Not sure what this assembly is called, but it is being replaced.


The front slam panel has been cut off.


As Tim only works at Carrera Performance part time, its going to be a couple of months before the metal work is finished.
