Hi Phil

The casings look great but I would be very careful about vapour blasting anything that sees oil. It's very difficult to clean all the media as it gets impregnated into the metal then can come out as it gets washed with hot oil.

Kind regards

Thanks John. Noted!

James, I'll be in Connecticut 22nd to 26th or 27th ...in Stamford. I think you're in CT too? Far? Fancy meeting up? I'll be at a shipping conference Monday to Wednesday. I'll check and reply again on all your comments. Most interesting. The trans is numbered 5776H5.

We've been experimenting with some cold black oxide chemicals today. Superb results. More to follow.

Great stuff Phil.

Progress has been steady over the last few months. A huge number of parts have been carefully disassembled, cleaned, primed and painted ...using only the best quality German paint of course. We now have shelves full of beautiful new-looking pre-A parts. Nice! Welding the body only just about to start sadly - just too many similarly unwell folk in the queue.

The gearbox is now back together and looking great. Check on vlog8 on youtube channel PorscheSOS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep9ovMXS2Ic

We've also tested the ColdOx black oxide kit from Caswell Europe and found it excellent. If you've been wondering how to recreate black oxide (e.g. throttle bodies on Zenith carbs) rather than painting things that weren't originally painted, I'd recommend it. http://www.caswelleurope.co.uk/

Car's looking great. Not sure about the choice of music though - wasn't it used in 'platoon'?

Finally, having given up on Photobucket, I've loaded some images of the Pre A build on Flickr.

It's been almost a full-time job shopping and trawling for original parts this last several months. Everything original so far except a repro starter button and an A ignition. Both hard to find and both very expensive when you do. Still hoping for an original gear knob.

Very pleased with the parts restoration, especially the various cables such as the throttle cable. They were all vandalised / cut by some toe rag who tried to steal the lot before the car left the States.

After 1057 hours in Lionel's bodyshop, we trial fitted many of the parts and then sent the car to the paintshop.

Carbs are on their way back from Carburetor Rescue and I'm off to New York and Connecticut this week where they're being delivered to my hotel for cuddling on the way home. I'll be meeting James Davies for the second time. James has become something of an originality guru (and is a lovely bloke). Tacho is on its way back from Palo Alto Speedometer (although I still can't believe that we don't have a good restorer here in the UK - I have a friend doing some trial runs on some gauges to try him out for quality) and I'm anticipating a delivery any day of rockers / rocker bolts, a couple of tappets with adaptors, various fuel lines, camshaft and oil filler from Stepan Gencev in the Czeck Republic. He advertises on the Samba and has been good to deal with. I'll report back on the quality of parts when they're here.

Here are some piccies:

Looking for these knobs. Apparently, barndoors used them too. Anyone know anyone with some?
