That cage looks great but is not in compliamce with appendix K as I understand it.
There are three door bars, and I think more than six attachments to the shell?
And the v braces to half height don't appear in the drawings allowed..
Admittedly its opaque...I try to keep up but it does change every year..
Best to check before going further..much cheaper to crrect now than later..
David
HI David, thanks for your comments. I've been told by custome cages that the cage is FIA appendix K compliant, to include the "sill" bar and other mods such as the floor bars for monting seats - as you expect these add to rigidity. The 7th support - the one that "rests" on between the rear seats is not welded in place - therefore only a six point cage. The 7th point is actually bolted in place but can be unbolted if required at an FIA event. We still have to fit additional both fittings to allow the cage to be bolted to the shell along the roof line front & rear and door / windcreen posts etc. All these can obvioulsy removed for FIA events but less likely to be picked up at races in the UK/Ireland.
Check out custom cages web site and look at the historic 911 drawing and you'll see the line drawing of the cage and you'll see it's FIA approved.

I believe there will be change for appendix K regarding 8 point cage. Not valid here in Finland yet as our regulations here follows FIA book with some delay. Custom Cages should know what they are doing but better check locally.
How you were able to weld upper tube joints without removing roof panel?
What kind of fuel tank you will be using?
Good luck for hte project and keep updating this thread!

We cut slightly larger holes where the foot plates for the front and main hoops meet the shell. Simply dropped down the cage (after tack-welding) and welded the tops of the joints fairly easily. WE then lifted the cage back up, slipped in the base plates and welded the rest of the car up. It takes 20+ hours to weld in properly - can't rush such an important part of the car preparation.

Parts arrived, work starts again. This time we are hoping to get the car ready for paint. There is still considerable work to be done. The cage needs some weld nuts to allow temporary fixing of the cage to the front and rear hoops to the roof plus additional bolt-on fixings to the door pillars etc.
The main work however is to remove the RSR flares and re-fit SWB '65 911 panels. Thx to Andy yet again from R-RSR.
Pics show the considerable amount of the RSR flares we had to remove along with the replacement SWB panel butt welded in place. We' ll tackle the other one tomorrow.

The flares are but welded, and as it's going to be a race car i'll spend the time getting the metal as close to the correct shape before putting a skim of filler on it. I can't afford the weight penalty on putting lead anywhere near the car!!!!

Got lots done over the weekend and pleased to update the forum.
First the rear of the 911 has an oil tank so the 912 inner wing had to be modified to accept the tank fittings and fixing point, the 912 had the correct inner wing pressing but no holes. It took a while but was pretty straightforward.
We had the same 912 problem with the dash as mine had 3 holes so another two were cut from a template made from another 911.

As the the floor hand been previously repaired we noticed that the rear mounting points for the steering rack were "missing" obviously a newer floor section(s) were fitted - we made up our own towers to fix the problem.
Now that most of the major welding is done it's now time to dry fit as many of the major items before sending to the paint shop.
Body work fitted but lots to do to get panel fit correct (for racing purposes - no concours!) starting to look the part again.

We're now starting the long slog to prepare the car for paint. The rear quarter panels need the most work as you can see. However there are many areas that will require attention prior to paint. My mate/bodyshop guy Ali Greer has been working on panel fit and has made a great job so far getting the gaps to a standard that I'm more than pleased with.
My Solex carbs arrived yesterday from the US where I bought them on ebay - pleased to see they have the linkages and manifolds. The Solex carbs are the only ones allowed under the FIA Homologation for 1965. I'll need to get some work done on the them to try to improve them.

The day was spend putting a "skim" of filler over the rear left quarter panel. The whole panel has been covered and is thankfully quite thin in places however more work is need with a block to get it to the correct profile and at the same time removing as much of the filler as poss. We should have the panel finished tomorrow, then on to the other side.
The real plus at this stage of prep is that the rear quarter panels are the only areas that need filler - the rest of the panels all seem fairly straight and good. The gaps around the door are particularly good - this is as i've said before a "black art" and i'm please with the results do far.
I hope that we can get the car in to paint in the next two weeks.
