What a great project.

The CAD work adds another dimension especially as I'm a pen and paper sketcher but my engineers use powerful CAD all day at work.

The car goes way back and you need I feel to be sypathetic to that, but it is 2010 now so there are bound to be a revised points of view and aspirations.

Fitting clam shells is easy. Making the shell in metal is bloody hard i think and making it robust enough to survive the roads we have in our country adds another dimension.

I really look forward to the translation of design to metal.

I agree with #4 too.

Time to make the base plate, the main formers to the centre line and the car up on stands.

Wire to the ready, and a little mig welder

I presume you will use the car itself as the main platform.
Preparation is everything, but there comes a time to 'shoot' the designer and let the engineering begin, then 'shoot' the eng and the body roller/fabricator's turn comes round etc.

Steve is not settled on the design yet, that's why we try out different things.
And I agree with him that it's better to find a design you like on "paper" before you start bending the metal.

Although, as I've said before, I'm sure that when push comes to shove, there'll be some changes just for practical reasons: things that don't meet up 'in the flesh', perhaps a juicy autojumble find that deserves to be worked in etc etc.

Also number 4. The front end just looks right with the downward curve of the front wing. (But of course would say that running an "A")

Hi guys, as part of the build up I need a set of worn Dunlop Racing tyres to ensure we get the radius of the wheel arches and ride height sorted - does anyone have an old set that are beyond use that we can use for mock-up purposes? thanks, Steve

Sorry it has been so long since I posted an update. Barry and I spent a very productive morning at Classic Le Mans looking at how manufacturers of the era solved problems such as door latches and clamshell hinging. It was also hugely useful to be able to point at a the front of a Ferrrari 250LM and go "that's how the front nose should curve!" We also agreed with Ian Clark who is doing mechanical fettling that it would be rude not to install the Shorrock supercharger I have sitting gathering dust on the shelf.... On a sad note I had a call from the wife of the original builder of the Special to say that he passed away abruptly earlier this year, which was terribly saddening to hear. Some mysteries will obviously now remain so, but his son's are watching the progress of the car on this forum and I hope one day to be able to take them for a drive in lieu of being able to take their father out as originally intended. Barry starts on the wire form buck soon so no doubt we'll be posting more pictures soon. Cheers, Steve
