Fuel Tank Renovation

Post by 1972_911t »

My fuel tank looks quite rusty on the surface inside, ive seen several products for renovating the inside of fuel tanks such as the por-15 product, would anyone recomend doing this or is it a no no to try to use any lining on the inside of the fuel tank?

http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp? ... &frostCat=

My main concer is it deteriorating and getting ino the fuel system and potentially the engine itself.

I have not tried this but several people on here have tried the POR15 kit. I think there was a DDK members group buy on this a few years ago.

I organised a group buy back in 2003.

The thing you need is the full tank repair kit: http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp? ... k%20Repair

The kit consists of: 946ml Marine Clean, 590ml Metal Ready, 946ml Tank Sealer and 473ml Fuel Preservative.

I thought that the Fuel Preservative wasn't really important and that it would be better to get more of the marine Clean and Metal Ready. I asked Frosts to create another kit consisting of: Metal Ready Rust Remover (3.78ltrs), Marine Clean (3.78ltrs), Tank Sealer (946ml). The deal cost £44 which was a decent saving on buying these individually.

The 5 or 6 of us that did the group buy were very impressed with the results of using the Frost Tank Repair kit. the key thing is to follow the instructions to the letter. Make sure the tank is clean and dry at each stage of the repair.

Just done mine (now repainting the outside).

Looks to have done the trick - very easy to do, but you need fresh air as it's quite fumy!

yup

did mine a while back, still waiting to put the tank in the car... but it worked very well

a group buy is a good idea as I had loads of the tank sealer left over, and have yet to find a use for it

also would not bother with the fuel preservative

make sure you dry the tank out thoroughly in between the stages (I used a hair drier), and keep rotating the tank when using the sealer to get it into al the nooks and crannies, whole process worked really well

also did the outside, with the POR-15 paint system, 2 coats applied within 3/4 hours for extra protection

I already have the marine clean and metal ready so I will just buy the sealer on its own, what size will I need the 475ml or the 946ml?

Thanks Steve

steve

pretty sure I bought the bigger one, not wanting to be short for the sake of a few quid
in truth I dont think I used half of the bigger tin so the smaller one should ( ) do.........however, maybee having the larger amount of sealaer in the tank shloshing around was needed to get good coverage....... :?

let me have a look in the garage, if I still have the old tin I could post it to you, so you need only buy a smal tin

if so would you mind paying for the postage ?
