Speedster Rep Light Resto
Hi guys,
A good friend of mine passed away recently due to illness. We'd both been aircooled bores for as long as i can remember. He had a number of old Porsches in his fleet; C3.2, 944, 928, and this Speedster replica. It was built in 1971 and wears its patina beautifully. Most of the trim is pitted and the seals are perishing, but it feels like it adds a little authenticity to it. The car is now mine and such a lovely thing to drive. Very different to my 300bhp backdate, obviously, but all the more special for it.
It currently has 15x6" Fuchs on it and horrible hand painted whitewalls.
The Fuchs are lovely but don't suit a Speedster in my eyes. I'm unsure what they are though. They appear genuine and with a 901 part number. Could they be early ones?
I've decided to go with some Group 4 LMZ 5" wheels;
And Pirelli Cinturato 175/70 CN36s.
The reason I went for 175/70 CN36 and not the CA67 N rated is the latter are bigger and would have raised the ride height 12mm. The 175/70 circumference is almost spot on and I think it'll look nicer with the wheels a little more inboard. I can live with the 2mm increase.
Happy hear opinions and also any information on the wheels. It would be lovely if they paid for the new shoes. Cheers.

Assuming all 4 are the same, those are genuine 'deep sixes' - you can see the fox head logo under the part number.

Nice looking Speedster replica too - all the better with the patina.
Will look even better on the different wheels ...

Cheers. Is that a good thing?... They're in decent shape from what I've seen but would need refinishing for a restoration.Lightweight_911 wrote:.

I have 16x7/8" on my 911 and I love the way they fill the SC profile arches. The 8s were hard to find and expensive. It wasn't cheap to get them all anodised and finished correctly. It was worth it though. I do think the Speedster will look far better in skinnier "steels" sitting a little further inboard though.

I think the Fuchs would look much better without the white walls and painted in the usual style of the era. I'd keep em as an option, it's unlikely you'd find a set of deep 6s again for sensible money.

The deep sixes are probably worth £500+ ea if they're in reasonable condition - more so if they are all the same date.
You can find the date codes on the rear - in the recesses between the webs near to the centre:

Argh, don't do that. I've only just convinced myself that a full resto in black to match the 911 was the wrong thing to do. That picture is not helping my resolve at all. It does look much nicer on the painted Fuchs too. Hmmmm.....Nige wrote:I think the Fuchs would look much better without the white walls and painted in the usual style of the era. Thanks. I really appreciate the advice. I'll give them a through clean once I have the new ones on. It would be nice to keep them but funds are tight and if they can pay for a new set from Group4 plus tyres it's very tempting.Lightweight_911 wrote:.

Nige is right - and it will be more as your friend left it - without the shonky whitewalls.Nige wrote:I think the Fuchs would look much better without the white walls and painted in the usual style of the era. Looks great, hope you are keeping the Fuchs?
Maybe want some retro looking seats now to complete the look.

Re: Fuchs Wheels on my Speedster Rep
I do still have the Fuchs. I can't see any circumstances where I'd need a spare set and they're a date matched set of deep 6s so could fund the winter tidy up.
I love the patina it wears, but the interior looks like it was refurbished in the 80/90s. The seats don't suit it and are tatty, as are the carpets. It may be 51 years old but it's still a kit car. Like with my 911 I'm going for an aesthetic rather than any kind of originality.
I've ordered a pair of these, sprayed in Old English White to match the body. They'll then be upholstered and trimmed to the front faces and inside bolsters in cognac leather with basketweave centres. I think they'll look lovely with matching backs to the car. The rest of the interior will be retrimmed in cognac leather/basketweave with a caramel carpet.
