Supercar Classics and Porsche....

Post by Mike »

I was just sorting through some old Supercar Classics and I'd forgotten how often Porsche's featured on the cover, and that's just from my incomplete set!

Any other's I'm missing?
cheers, Mike.

If I remember correctly that article featured Fred Hampton & Richard Corey-Smith

I turfed virtually all of my old car magazines out several years ago (except a couple of those editions you pictured) - although I did keep the Elite article (not the whole magazine).

I'd forgotten that the Elite featured belonged to Miles Wilkins who I worked with briefly in the early '70's - just before he started at Len Street's in Chelsea ...

I was in touch with Eion and his daughter just before COVID

I discussed the magazine with Steve Cropley not too long ago at sn industry event where we happened to did next to one another. I told him his “Porsche should still make this car” feature that explained how Anne John’s used her RS as everyday transport and raced it was pivotal on me starting to look for one. I knew about them already of course and fancied one already but because of living in London with only small garage limited parking at time wasn’t interested in a modern car plus a classics. This narrative of how RS versatility worked for her tipped the balance. Not too long I began the search and I bought the RHD RS that I still have today. Nice line drawings in that article I recall. Per the thrust of the article about John’s versatile use it too was my everyday car and fun car all rolled into one. Used to take the kids to and from school (TRS made me some custom rear belts for the kids they weren’t so known those days so obliged ) , it was supermarket shopping car (although even then parked it well away from crowded bays), did track days including coaching on how to drive an RS frum an expert, served fir European holidays and classic touring events. Spent fair bit of time parked in Heathrow long term car park as I was travelling frequently with work. Never failed me except bit thirsty and once ran out of petrol at bust London junction when playing chicken with fuel gauge.

Pleased I bought that issue as might’ve been different. Steve was surprised I remembered it interesting to hear about on the magazine and some of the characters behind it. Too short lived a publication. Agree it was the best classic my favourite magazine of its era.

No Porsche content on the covers of the first issue Autumn 83 or the last September 91 I'm afraid...

....but inside cover ad of the 1st issue was for the new 3.2 Carrera!

It was a great piece Ian. I was running my 246 at the time but remembered it and dug it out to re-read before buying the Vetro.

Mike - if you stll have this issue to hand :

Image

- can you have a quick flick through & see if there's an advert showing cars for sale at dealer Michael Ticehurst (I think he provided the 924 Turbo on the cover) as it was around this time I bought my RHD 924 Carrera GT from him (via an advert in Supercar Classics) ....

Andy, here's Michael ad January 91, only very expensive 924 turbo's I'm afraid. Had a look around at a few issues either side and no ad from him at all, so guessing they gave him that one in exchange for the use of the car for the piece.

Image

As for the high prices, you have remember it was that crazy boom just before the crash. Here's a great example in the classified that month, a Carrera GT at 25K, to put it in perspective that's what I paid for mine 20 years later!
