James, to give us all a little help is there anything realistic other than a beetle cabriolet that she does like?

I can see insurance being a killer on an e30 BMW , MK2 escort, early porsche 911 ( ideally white swb with red interior ) or a ferrari F50.

To scratch the Jdm itch what about

A civic?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-detail ... obcid=soc3

Or a second gen crx?

https://www.carandclassic.com/car/C1361341

https://www.carandclassic.com/car/C1358889

Both come in below the £5k threshold, unfortunately the civic is slightly erm flat backed.

You could ask what she would like to pay for , insure and run? The acceptable list might grow

I thought I'd won the lottery with a clapped out 17 yr old 1974 beetle. I could see more of the road than the floorpan.

From the Hyundai S Coupe Wikipedia page:

"This car made an appearance on BBC Top Gear Series 13 Episode 2 as Richard Hammond's car for the challenge where the presenters are finding the perfect car for a 17-year-old driver."

& has competition pedigree winning it's class in the '92 Pikes Peak

& in the hands of rally royalty with the mk2

just checked insurance .

crx is about £1K more to insure than a mini1 convertible :(

hyundai coupes are even more

Mazda Mx3 , Honda civic coupe etc are also all too expensive to insure.

Daughters new suggestion was a Porsche 944

The more I look the more we either end up at boring little hatchback or mini convertible , beetle convertible or older golf convertible ... these can be insured for aabout £900 with no black boxes ( would be less if one was fitted but I have a hatred of those things )

Yep, avoided the Clipper due to airbag issues. Cool though

Who’ve you tried for insurance James? A bunch of the younger guys in our old vw club used to use a company called bell who seemed to specialise in policies for young drivers, I remember them coming in several hundred pounds cheaper than some of the more well known places. This was a few years ago now but might be worth a try.

Is this for the '88 - '95 81-92hp 1500cc or the more powerful, bigger engined mk2 though?

More importantly, how did I become an '88 - '95 Hyundai S Coupe salesman?

Here's a picture of the designer of the S Coupe, Park Jong-suh. He wouldn't want you worrying about insurance costs

If a hatchback isn't wanted you'll do well with a VW Jetta. Airbags, inexpensive, lots of protective metal all around.
