Re: No none electric car sales from 2030??
Great post by Deano if depressing, it's real, which this situation is.
However, another way to see this black cloud is to ration miles per person (not per car), that will throttle back the demand for volts/amps.
The gap in the coffers due to fossil fuel loss to the Gov will be there and need to be substituted for something else, so those mile rationed out will be taxed to £ per mile.
This will make travel very expensive, stop long journeys (to Le Mans say) and keep people at home bases/ranges.
If we each got 10K/year to cover all our needs, work and social most would be ok.
Those who actually drive a lot for leisure (us for example) will not be able to be so free-living.
Of course. tracking who is actually driving a vehicle is another issue, but Big Bro will find a solution.
Finally from me, there will be a good rush to buy a fossil car in 2029, mostly petrol/hybrid and you could keep that car until it is dead, easy 100+K miles.
Fuel will be abundant as more EV's = More fossil fuel for us for longer.
I will certainly be dead before this lot really kicks in, but anyone under 40 will have a hard time, but social attitudes will change, lots of youngsters have abandoned driving (until they have kids who want to be ferried everywhere...
Maybe that big train line is a good idea after all.

Re: No none electric car sales from 2030??
There will likely be incentives to charge at home or penalties to charge away from home for those who can but don’t. A personalised electric charge card perhaps?

It not clear to me that currently electric cars uses less energy or carbon. It just moves the population to out of city / roads. Maybe if I'm still here in 50 years we will producing all our power from sun, wind and tide. Super fast, clean, flat torque cars will be zooming around at speeds we never dreamed of.

And they will drive themselves, remove the human error element from motorways and the speeds can safely increase.
Car ownership will rapidly decrease,
meaning that you can forget about charging, parking hassles etc, just hail a self driving Uber from your phone and off you go.
Already operating in phoenix.

Re: No none electric car sales from 2030??
Penalties were effectively brought in last year - £6 just to plug it in at the services (+ pence per kWh) for up to 30 minutes. This has now been dropped to £3 for 45 mins....210bhp wrote:There will likely be incentives to charge at home or penalties to charge away from home for those who can but don’t. £6 would be an incentive for most people perhaps to charge at home. £3 is perhaps too low to be an incentive, but you can only get so much juice into a battery in 45 mins so maybe that limitation is a good incentive too if one has to travel long distances...

Re: No none electric car sales from 2030??
Add to all of the above that from 2025 all new build homes must have electric heating, and all older higher polluting existing boilers will have to be replaced by electric systems whenever they reach the end of their useful life.
I don't see how the infrastructure can be improved to cater for all of this in such a short space of time.
I think I'll have to negotiate with my brother to buy his Lister Start-o-Matic.

Apologies if it’s been posted before, but this Top Gear video shows Chris Harris interviewing a (car enthusiast) National Grid engineer about an electric car future. They discuss many of the issues above, including the impact of classics at about 16 min if you want to skip ahead

Once we've had our Zoom family Christmas dinner next month we'll quickly realise we don't need to go anywhere.
From there it's a short slippery slope to the National Grid providing enough energy only to keep us plugged into Netflix & Facebook and our Sexbots fully charged

Re: No none electric car sales from 2030??
Yes, exactly. 10 years ago I bought shares in one of the UK's leading hydrogen fuel cell companies.Tosh wrote:Worrabout the most abundant element in the universe? No, not stupidity...
I've watched the share values fluctuate from hero to zero and back again ever since, and even sold half of mine after a few years in the doldrums, only to watch them go up 20 times in value 12 months later!
Most of the time I feel like I invested in Betamax instead of VHS As we all know: Betamax was the superior technology, but it still didn't win the format war.

James,
I've got a nice laser disc you might like to buy...
Fascinating chat with Harris on that Youtube link. Really interesting. Good point about hydrogen - infrastructure.
His chat with Johnny Smith was also very good.
