ENGINE ON MY 356

Post by jtw2004uk »

Just about to drop my engine out of my 356A. Will it come out OK without removing the whole gearbox?

Hi

On my B and C gearbox stays in the car, so I assume A is the same.

Do yourself a favour and when you have the engine out, modify the two top bolts that attach it to the gearbox. I drilled small hole in one of the facets of each one and punched in a small roll pin (so the pin sticks our about 1cm). That way when you go to reinstall the motor and fit the nuts from in the motor area, the bolt won't spin and prevent tightening of the nut.

Note that you need some High Axle Stands a HIGH Lift Jack and that the car has to be high enough to wheel the engine out on the jack - Measure

Is the jack in the sump plate when the engine is lower?

As stated above, be careful: to get the back high enough to slide the engine out the car is at quite an angle, i did it with stands under the front too. I lowered the engine on a board of plywood between the jack and the engine. This came down onto 2 blocks either side of the jack as a stable intermediate rest point. I was then able to wriggle the engine clear of a few things, and disconnect anything i had forgotten. I then removed the jack, replacing it with a mini innertube, which i inflated enough to release the blocks, then deflated slowly to lower the board to near ground level, then dragged the board out with the engine on it.
I like the roll pin idea above.
Good luck, work safe and slow. W
