You've got me at it now and just found this on PP.

"Here is the paint tag on my RS, which is Tangerine BTW. Bobby has the right idea but wrong order. The middle number is place of application, '9' is Porsche factory and I think '8' is Karmann. The last number is the paint manufacturer, '2' is Glasurit. '1' is Lesonal (sp?), not sure what '3' is."

First 3 digits are paint colour, the middle digit is the paint facility, the last digit the paint manufacturer (1=Lessonal, 2=Glasurit, 3=Herberts).....

I've just received a copy of Carrera 2.7 from Parabolica Press (wonderful looking book) and flicking through note that it states that the number 8 in the middle of the paint code plate indicates the car was shipped to Karosseriewerk Weinsberg for painting whereas the number 9 indicates the car was painted at the Porsche factory.

No idea why my humble 2.4T Sportomatic would have made it there along with most (all?) RS's.

Another mystery solved!

...my (now Tangerine) T was originally Light Ivory but I've retained the original paint tag as it's a nice piece of history.
