The 991 is the first of the VW "GT Franchise" cars which uses a tuned production engine and judging by the latest rumours of engine failures will not go down in history for particularly good reasons unlike the mezger engined cars which will take merciless thrashing and have a kings lineage to the GT1 and a hard earned reverence in racing circles..The mezger unit will go down as one of the greatest engines to be fitted to a motor car.

In many ways it is unfair to compare the GT4 and 991GT3 to the mezger cars which are so different and were created with a different ethic, the like of which we won't see again. :(

and the CGT was an irrelevance when it was current and failed to fulfill its build quota due to poor sales.

In the answer to the OP would I buy a GT4 over a new 911?

The answer is I wouldn't buy either..

My advice would be to buy a 997 GT3 then sit back and smile.

Yes, 7GT3 is looking conspicuously affordable right now and unlikely to stay that way as Porsche history adds its rose-tint.
