Electronic Ignition. Where to get a good unit?

Post by jeffnudd »

I still have the points system in my 2.2T, but i am keen to fit a more reliable Electronic Ignition System to it.

Is there an area i can start looking for a good system, i have seen the units on eBay, but they look cheap, i could be wrong and you guys may say there are a great alternative replacement.?

Some advise would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Jeff

P.S. I had the registration certificate thought last Friday, so it's officially going to be tearing up the (Bone dry) UK roads.

MSD make an excellent ignition system and you could use Pertronix to replace the points.

Alternatively Clewett make an excellent crankfire system.

Maybe others will wade in with their preferences.

This was discussed a few months ago to good effect, I might even have started the thread...
I fell foul of Accuspark, simply because the dist I have is the wrong handing, so do some homework on suppliers and your particular distributor.
People were very positive about msd and Pertronics.

The msd unit is large, and you won't hide or lose it in a 911 engine bay.
May be a concern for you, certainly not for me.

I recently fitted a Pertronix unit to a Cosworth FVC. Easy to install and it all fits inside the distributor. Sold in the UK as Aldon Ignitor, it is very popular with the USA Porsche world.

Interesting, as I had an Aldon unit in my dist with matching coil, but the car never ran cleanly, again, I think because of the handing of the 2.7RS dist I have.

It was removed and points fitted (!) and runs really well.

Yes, i am also worried that some systems will effect the running or reliability, that is why i am interested in what you guys have fitted in the past, i have seen simple electronic systems that bolt straight into the distributor for around £30 but i am a bit weary. All i want to do is replace the points rather than start replacing coils and distributors etc.

Have a good nights kip then have a look at Aldon. As has been mentioned they sell Pertronix, rebadged as the Aldon ignitor and I've found them excellent to deal with.

It's important to fit the correct unit for your distributor, here's the list of ignitors on Aldons website.

I don't know which one you'd use for a 2.2T but there's a fair chance someone here will already have one fitted.

Regards, Mike.

If that question is asked of me, it is a left handed RS 2.7 dist.
Accuspark make only a right handed version ( )

I know Alan , the boss of Aldon, he hillclimbs a lot. He made mine specially for my dist for me. I gave him the loose dist and he adapted the system.
My dist is a Bosch

I found this company based in the UK, http://www.simonbbc.com/

They sell the Powerspark range of ignition components. They seem pretty knowledgeable and offer both points/condenser kits or electronic upgrades. Can't vouch for the quality versus the Pertronix kits, however they are quite a bit cheaper
