porsche tool P297

hi all

according to my bently manual, to remove the rear wheel hubs I need porsche tool P297, or other suitable drift

at £60 from porsche thats a bit expensive, does anyone know if a cheaper tool or other supplier could do the job

To remove the rear hubs from my '72 car the other week, I placed a very large socket (45mm?) against the hub (from the engine side) and gently tapped them out with a hammer.

They should come out really easily, but you need to be aware that removing the hub will likely destroy the wheel bearings.

To put them back in once the bearings had been replaced, I used a piece of threaded rod with two ring spanners bolted on to it about 180 degrees apart to create a brace behind the trailing arm and the same socket from above then slid over the rod with a bolt behind it which as I tightened, pulled the hub back into place.

Far cheaper than the proper tool and just as effective.

brilliant, simple ideas often the best, I'll give it a go over the weekend, so long as I can get a big socket, not sure my local Halfords have such a big socket.....will find out

Just another thought Jonathan...

If you have a good local nut and bolt supplier, they'll probably have some large diameter thick washers that will work just as well as the socket approach for a fraction of the money.

They'll also have the threaded bar
