Dellorto Twin 45s (not a Porsche)

Post by Adam »

Hi guys!

I thought id put a quick post up to see if anyone can help.

I have a 1977 VW Scirocco with a Autocavan engine and I’m using Dellorto twin 45s.

I had the car set up at protec racing in Preston back in November and I've finally just got the car on the road.

From what I can work out; its over fuelling...

On acceleration the car is very hesitant and cuts out after about 10 miles and upon removing the plugs they are very black and one plug is soaking wet with fuel.

I’ve checked the plug that was wet and there is a spark.

I plan to take it back to protec but they are away on holiday for 2 weeks.

I’m just wondering if you guys might know what is up; it could be a easy fix?

Any guides on the net I could have a look at for self tuning?

Adam

Could be any number of things but I'd check the fuel pressure & float levels first.

What size engine, mods and output? Are they DHLAs? Are they new or s/h?

As hinted to above, they probably need a regulator depending on you fuel pump flow/pressure.

I ran twin 40s on a 2 litre Fiat Twink with around 130bhp. My carbs were initially so over fuelled, the engine wouldn't run at all. Turns out the letter after the DHLA is very important. In my case I had an unusual letter (the carbs were secondhand and were DHLA- M I think). This required a completely different set of jets and emulsion tubes.

P.s. 45's sound a bit large to me.

They are DCOEs.

Mods: bored to 1.9, big valve head, race cam, port and polish etc

Car made 140bhp on the rollers when I first had it tuned, not sure if that is flywheel or wheels.

I have been told that 45s are too big.

The car originaly used to race in the Toyo cup years ago, this engine set-up is exactly what was used back then.

If this is a race car, set up to run at high load and revs, and you drive it on the road, you are never going to keep it on full load, so I think you need to get it set up for road use.

Not that it makes any difference to your questions (or the answers) but DCOE's are Webers not Dellorto's ...
