Re: O/T..So, bought a 996 Turbo
An original 1st edition tax disc holder, I had no idea! Thats going on ebay, a rare piece of Porsche history
I'm not expecting cheap to run necessarily, but should at least be better than the £50k 1st year depreciation hit that 991 Turbo owners will enjoy!
Autowerke had said it was surprisingly clean underneath, and it has had recent brakes, rad, clutch, battery, rear tyres so hopefully no big surprises soon. But it is 14 years old of course...which is hard to believe really.

Re: O/T..So, bought a 996 Turbo
So is this a common, or even inevitable failure on a non-turbo 996, say a Carrera 2, and what is the expected mileage and fix cost? Does the fix deal with the problem permanently or just re set the clock on that issue. Just doing my homework before trying to steer my Mrs into a 996 as a daily driver......

Re: O/T..So, bought a 996 Turbo
Ims problem, according to Porsche was due to faulty batch of bearings. However, a new one with every clutch seems to be the standard advice.
The other issue is bore scraping. This is probably due to the Teflon coating on the pistons wearing through. Much less discussed than the IMS problem.

Possible, rather than common or inevitable. Re: O/T..So, bought a 996 Turbo
I would say that, in view of a letter I have now seen from Barry Hart on this subject, that there is more to this than first appears. I would say 'Very possible', 'more common than realised' and 'almost inevitable'. However, as Barry says, solutions are available, but don't think for one moment that M96-engined cars are a bullet-proof bet. View them as a cheap way to own a modern Porsche but always be aware that you might (just might) get stuck with a £5K, or more, bill one day.Le Samourai wrote:Possible, rather than common or inevitable. The problem is that there will be no prior warning. A test drive will show nothing because the car will be perfect – until it goes wrong. I wonder how many independents will be prepared to offer (and then honour) a used car warranty on a 996? Barry does warrant his rebuilt engines, though. Shame Porsche has chosen to ignore the problem.

Well done Mr Burma Shave Johnny. You will enjoy. They are great cars.
Please have rear tyres on stand by. I am what I consider to be a non-mental driver and I could not get more than 5-6000 miles out of the rears, and they are mega expensive.
Regards
Mike

Re: O/T..So, bought a 996 Turbo
Thanks Mike, as a fellow non mental driver..ahem..I will try and preserve that rear rubber!
Still not sure how I managed it Stuart. The garage is full of bikes too. I think I mumbled something about lack of depreciation (the old 'its just moving money not spending it' line) and how nice it would be to take the family winter holiday in Aviemore and the summer holiday in Fife this year..dogbower wrote:Johnny
