What's it worth mister...???

Post by sdelan »

Afternoon All - I've been having a look at alternatives to the early 911 and am really liking the little Alfa GTs at the moment - example attached.

I appreciate the world of 911s is now gone completely mad but do wonder how/why anyone would buy the attached LHD 911T for restoration (or any of the other "barn finds" on the market) rather than something like the GT Junior. One being nippy, gorgeous little car with lots of character and race proven pedigree going back years - the other being a pile of poo!!

I do understand that the market determines the "worth" etc etc - but do wonder if the auld emperor might just be naked!!

Very happy to have it explained to me! :)

regards
Sean

Hi Sean
It makes no sense to me, I've owned and regretted selling (there I go again) both.
The early tipo 105 Sprint GT was a wonderful little car and in real world driving as much fun as an early 911...
As for the links you posted the sepia car is a joke price wise (just no ones laughing anymore).

All the best

There are lots of 'sporty' classic cars out there that are currently much better value for an enthusiast than an early 911.

Alfas of any age can rust horrendously - as bad or worse than any 911 - but there are lots that are mainly rust-free. 105 Giulias of all types (including the boxy saloon) are great cars but the 'step-front' coupes are the most sought after ... cheapest (coupe) option will be the 1300 GT as in your link.

Don't let the 1300 cc engine put you off. I had a 1300 junior Boat- tail spider and it was a hoot to drive on country roads.
Obviously not a high performance car , but a lot more fun to drive than my old 911 2.2S ( an over rated machine ).
That little Alfa engine is sooooooo eager and she will sing to you all day long. The buzzy exhaust will always remind you that your driving an Alfa.
You will need to stir the gearbox to wrench out all the performance, but the box is so pleasant to use that you find yourself swapping cogs just for the hell of it.
If you were unlucky enough to blow the engine, a rebuild ain't gonna be a £ 10k job
Any manufacturer whose logo shows a serpent swallowing a child has a sense of fun - and Alfa's are fun.
If you are looking for a mixture of fun and a sound investment take a look at this

Andy - IMO your car would sell for a lot more than the asking price of that Giulietta.

Here's an old picture of my '59 Giulietta Sprint (I don't tend to take many pictures of my cars):

Or get this and do "things" to it. The seller, Chris Whelan , builds lovely engines for these things....

Lovely, a 50s Alfa and a sepia 911. Heaven on a drive way (IMHO), thanks for posting :P

It's a very personal thing &, as many people know, I'm biased towards Italian cars (& prefer light small-engined ones) but if I was in the market for a classic car to put a smile on my face I'd be looking at (in no particular order) at something like:

Alfa Giulietta Sprint/Spider (& saloon)
Alfa Giulia Sprint/Spider (& saloon)
Lancia Fulvia coupe (especially 1600HF Lusso)
Lotus Elan
Lotus Europa
Austin Healey 'Frogeye' Sprite

- not many British cars 'do it' for me (& those that do are significantly more expensive than the cars listed above) & most non-European 'classics' I find boring ...

I have also been drawn to Lotus Europas recently Andy. Really starting to appeal. As are Lancia Montecarlos for some strange reason as I know they are a nightmare rustwise.

As well as the rust issue (which is major) the Montecarlo's performance is mediocre - that's why there are quite a few which have had Alfa V6 engine transplants ...

Hi all - thought I'd add to this thread - I hope I'm not going to get kicked out for such non-Porsche heresy!

But there are some lovely little Lancia Fulvias out there - I especially like the Rally cars such as this one.....

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C417454

Anyone know of a cheap Fulvia for sale? I think it would be a nice project to try to build a Group 4 Rally Car "evoluzione" 8)
