Anyone built a Covin before?

Post by misteralz »

This:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Covin-911-She ... 1940715%26

Popped up in my regular eBay search for '911 shell' - I've got the space and all I want to do is build an outlaw, really. My better half's onboard with the idea as well. Except not if it's a replica. :(
Anyone here able to provide some evidence to help me change her mind? I also like the idea of building it as a Cal Looker - '80s style - so Empi 8s (which I have sitting doing nothing) a bright or pastel colour, debadged and dechromed, maybe even some graphics? Either way, I wouldn't be trying to make out it was a real Porsche. If it were to be 'outlawed', I'd maybe have 'ersatz' or something similar written down the sides in that Porsche typeface...

Although Covin was founded by an old friend of mine, Tim Cook, (Co...) and Nick Vincent (Vin....), all I will say is that you'll struggle to be taken seriously anywhere. They just don't look right and, in my mind, if you did go down the 'humour' route with graphics etc, you'd probably only make things look worse.

Covins are not cool. Sorry.

IMHO, of course...

I would suggest, of you want a cheap fun outlaw, then buy a 944 and have some fun with it. Matt paint, stripes, graphics, wheel swap, lowered, etc whatever takes your fancy.

That would get plenty of nodding approval unlike the covin which would probably cost more in the end.

That's entirely fair enough. I'm not particularly bothered about being taken seriously, but by the same token I'm not interested in driving something that doesn't look 'right'. I knew that you could get very good 356 replicas, and I was interested to know how the Covins compared to those. But now I'm casting my mind back to reading your first VW magazine as an impressionable child in the early '90s and remembering the adverts for the Covin 930 'dropover' kit for the 1303 and thinking even then that they looked shite... :bom:

Nope. I've got aircooled VWs and they stir the soul despite being slow and, in reality, shite. My first Porsche is going to be aircooled, too.

Or.... Build a replica 1985 vw caravelle carat known as the Porsche B32.

Gp white, Carrera striping, with matching coloured Fuchs and you'll be the champagne charly of every show.

Cheers,

I think in reality my first Porsche will be a 912, but an early one rather than an E. :)

i do have a spare 1975 RHD coupe shell and a 73 RHD targa shell

plus:
4x 14" wheels and tires
F&R seats
S type brakes
dampers

and I might be persuaded to sell a 2.4S engine and 915 box

so how desperately do you want to build your own outlaw??! 8)

I actually bought a completed Covin speedster and would love to know a bit of history about them... There seems to be very little info on the web about them... I'd be really grateful if you could point me to a website for history, numbers sold, get a copy of build manuals etc if at all possible...

Cheers,
BK
