1965 911SWB Rally Car - Ex Coyne, Fennell
1965 911SWB Rally Car - Ex Coyne, Fennell
It is with great regret that I am going to have to sell my '65 911 SWB Rally Car, which has a fantastic history with drivers / owners such as Bjorn Waldegard, John Coyne, and Frank Fennell.
It has had great results in the 1990's, and has competed on all the Home International Historic Rallies, and from around 200 to 2008 has been used on around a dozen or so "softer" International "Classic Marathon" type events.
I bought the car seven months ago, with a view to undertaking a "sympathetic" restoration back to a tidy, strong usable competition vehicle, but a recent diagnosis of a mildly debilitating illness will mean that I won't be able to crawl around under cars for any protracted lengths of time in the future.
This is a matching numbers LHD car, delivered from the factory, to a Californian OPC in May 1965. (Verified by the factory archive). It is very unusual for a competition car to have retained it's chassis / engine matching number status.
It was imported in the early 1990's and converted to an Appendix K Rally car by Eurotec, for its first UK owner.
It was driven by Bjorn Waldegard in the 1993 Bass Charrington Historic RAC Rally to 4th o/all.
In John Coynes ownership, he had excellent results on the following events during 1995 and 1996
1995 Ulster 5th o/a,
1995 Manx International, 2nd o/a
1995 Cork 20, 2nd o/a
1996 Galway 1st o/a
1996 Killarney 4th o/a
1996 Scottish 2nd o/a
When I bought it, it had not been run properly since 2008, although it was regularly started and the battery and fluids were kept topped up / monitored.
It passed an MOT , so was taxed and driven home .
This is a mechanically a high spec car, but the shell will need some rework before it can go serious rallying again.
As a minimum, it will need a n/side rear floor, would be better with both rear floors replaced, but the o/side is much stronger.
A pair of sills. (I can provide these).
The rest of the underside will be ok with some straightening out, however, all the underside needs taking back to bare metal , priming and repainting.
The exterior of the car looks bright , but needs some (however minor) cosmetic work to almost every panel. I have many photos of the underside, and exterior, showing the work required.
Mechanically, the car has had fortunes spent, and has all the best bits, including Weber 40IDS', FIA Appendix K '67 S spec engine rebuilt c. 2000 miles ago, 901 gearbox with works Rally ratio's, rebuilt with new LSD and very expensive 904 mainshaft 2000 miles ago, new SSI heat exchangers and silencer. New KN Filters, now with rain hats.
Note : Since the rebuild, the car has done one event, the 2008 Classic Marathon, trailered to the start and from the finish, rest are road miles.
Front suspension is Leda rebuilt dial-adjustable front struts, Comp. Bilsteins on the rear.
It has aluminium tank and sump guards.
Cibie Pallas - type foglamps on the bonnet.
The rest is all the usual rally / race safety modifications, including hand held, and plumbed in fire extinguishers.
Note that the Halda Twinmaster and Heuer Clock on a separate dash panel, have been removed.
The seats (Recaro and OMP) are the originals which Mr Waldegard sat in, but are now tatty and out of date, as are the Willans belts. The fire extinguishers will need re-vetting .
The interior generally is in need of refreshment, apart from the head lining.
There are six 6" Flat face Fuchs with good Vredestein Sprint Classics.
I would be willing to listen to part exchange deals with cash my way for very good cars, needing no restoration, of the following types :-
A very good 911SC Coupe RHD
Any respectable early 911
Alfa Giulia 105 Coupe or saloon (road or competition prepared), by "Competition prepared", I mean suitable for Le Jog type events.
Excellent Volvo Amazon / PV544 competition prepared.
A very good , well prepared Competition MGB roadster
Or something of this type of semi competition car, suitable for long distance road events.
Or £29995.
We all know what pristine, '65 Competition SWB's are making, and this matching numbers car is a little over a third of the cost, so , (particularly if the new owner can do much of the work his or herself,) it is still an attractive investment proposition.
The car is insured, in it's present state, for insurance purposes at £45000.
Genuinely interested parties should PM me for a full specification, and photo's of the parts of the car that need work.
I am advertising it on this site for 2 weeks to see if there is any interest before advertising on the more usual global sites.
Many thanks
Steve

Re: 1965 911SWB Rally Car - Ex Coyne, Fennell
I competed against this car many many times during the 1990's - It used to be orange then , what colour is it now ? ... I was wondering where it had got to ............ From memory after John owned it - Frank did not hold onto it for very long .... hmm ..... time to dig out my old results (we got booklets of results sent to us in those days !!)
Royal Enfield .. still in India
GL 1800 Tour DCT, for pleasure / Fantic 240 Professional - play
Rally 911 (1966) build parked for a while
Rally 928 (work started again - inc serious weight loss programe !)
.... and now another VW Up GTI owner.
