New member looking to finally buy a car

Post by Tp81 »

Hi to everyone.

I have been following the threads for sometime. Finally looking to import from USA.

Need to get my head round the import tax position, etc.

This post on PH looks promising. Does anyone have advice on this and the pitfalls?

Hi there

What you're after is a Binding Tarif decision, hopefully this link will work or just type Binding Tarif into Google.

http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/ch...

The classification code for 5% duty for classic cars is 9705

the tarif codes can be found on this website or again by searching for Tarif code into google

http://online.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/tar...

This is a good article to refer to when talking to HMR&C, its the decision in favour of importing classic cars at zero import duty and 5% VAT

Hope this all helps everyone, if you need more help just ask.

Just done this. 5% all worked out. I worked with a UK based specialist who knew US based expert to expect, then arranged shipping & import direct to his UK operation where all US to UK modification made. Not as much fun as J-Low's importing method, but extremely straight forward. I assume you're using early911sregistry & pelican to see cars that are on the market?

I'm sure there are many on here that can make very expert assessments of any candidates you find. It seems many come via US eBay, in particular non S cars. Advice I received was look for cars that are broadly solid without much restoration, as often exterior work covers structural issues. Also you would be paying tax on the value added by the work, better to import a cheaper solid car & do what needs doing by your preferred expert (or yourself of course) here.
Regardless, good luck & enjoy the process!

Thanks again for the advice. Would you recommend the import company that you used?

Looking at a 912.

Either a 66 or a 68?

Wasn't an import company. I worked with a Uk Porsche specialist who imports many cars personally, added mine to one of his shipments. I will privately tell you who so you can contact personally. Happy to tell you US shipping agent. Kind regards. Anthony
