Engine to Gearbox compatibility

Post by jury »

Need some help please...

I have a 1970 2.2 911 T engine that has been rebuilt to E spec, engine number 6103113...and I have a gearbox that came with my 912 project car, type 902/01 (4 speed?) serial number 1080642

In layman's terms can they be fitted together and used? Is it adviseable?

If so what would be needed in terms of clutch, flywheel etc etc

Cheers
Chris

You could use the 4-speed 902/01 taransmission with your 2.2 engine - using the '65-'69 911 flywheel & 215mm clutch but I don't think it woud enable you to get the best out of your engine.

I'd go for a 5-speed transmission - rule of thumb is to use the flywheel/clutch assembly that goes with your chosen transmission:

901 gearbox with '65-'69 911 flywheel/215mm clutch
911 gearbox with '70-on 911 flywheel/ring gear/225mm clutch
915 gearbox with '70-on 911 flywheel/ring gear/225mm clutch

Also bear in mind that fitting a 915 transmission will require some 'tin bashing' at the rear of the tunnel to give clearance to the bulkier gearbox.

Is it possible to convert that four speed box to a five speed?

Mike

Thanks for that Andy, much appreciated
