whats the differece between 356 / 912/ 914 engines

and why is there no Tech forum on here??

Basically the 912 engine was the final development of the 356 engine - virtually the same as the 356 C.

The 914 engine is totally different - essentially it's a VW type IV originally from the VW 411.

914 engines are not easily interchangeable with a 356. Depending on what sort of HP you're after you've got a few options.

A 356 or 912 engine in standard form will either be a straight 1600, a Super (75 bhp) or a Super 90 (90 bhp)

A 912 will be similar output to an Super engine.

You can take one of these out to 1720, uprate cam, carbs exhaust etc. and you will be able to get 110 plus.

you'll see what Jon Darlington has done to his 912 enigne - I'm sure if you Pm him he'll be pleased to give you an idea of costs involved etc.

If that seems a bit daunting then look at a hi po Type 1 engine - it will be cheaper in the long run - Bad Junker on here is running one in his Pre A and running twelves on the strip. Tomski is also running a Type 1 in his 356A

Aircooledtechnology prepare 914/912E/TypeIV engines for 356s.
Their website is being updated at the moment but usually has plenty of information.

I'm putting one of their 2270cc Type IVs in my 356 replica, and with an upright cooling conversion and a conversion flywheel it will just bolt-in (to a Type I transaxle in my case, but they have the parts to fit up to a 356 transaxle also I believe)

I like the idea of a type 1 motor
I know these very well and they will be much easier to maintain,and cheaper

how do these fit in a 356B
what bits are needed

Hi Shambly... I'm thinking of going down this route as well but can't find any pricing info on the site - what kind of cash are you talking about for the type 4?

Was the shipping expensive?

Did you send over a type 4 case?

It may have been accidently pruned but all tech features should be moved to tech and stay there - oops
