Backdating the Interior

I made some RS panels and pulls. Lightweight sourced some handles and .. bingo

Heres my dashboard. Delete everything , anodise some alloy and a few toggle switches. Oh and clock blank from a bit of black ABS re-use the rubber ring and bond together with sika flex perfect and nearly FREE

Wow Haasad, that is definitely a clean, light looking set-up. What exactly are the toggles controlling?

The toggle switches operate side lights, headlights (on/off), Blower (high /low) A "rain light" ( fog lamp to comply with MOT needs in the uk) .

It also has a Hazard lamp switch a single click ignition key, a start button, "doomsday" covered engine kill and pull handles for battery switches and fire extinguishers.

And yes it is or will be a road legal race car.

Very impressive. I've always wanted to incorporate toggle switches with those red aircraft safety covers into a car. You've inspired me to revisit that for this project, maybe for the driving lights.

In the meantime, I've stripped out the interior, spent endless days scraping carpet glue, and cut out the rear seat and belt mounts. After much cleaning, I've moved on to installing a butyl based sound and heat insulating layer. This is the first of 2 steps prior to installing my lightweight RS carpet kit. Also, I've decided to order a reproduction parcel shelf, since I'm not building a lightweight and could use some extra storage.

Don't do the parcel shelf

Just take less stuff with you!

It doesn't fit with the hardcore look of your car. Just my thoughts

Thanks Gary, mine is more of a touring car, maybe you're confusing it with images from haasad's car. Anyway, thanks for the input. I like the idea though of having a place to put pieces of actual luggage in the car, and we all know the trunk (or in your cases the 'boot') isn't suitable for that. Without the rear fold down seats, the only choice is the luggage deposit. That however, is a project for a later date and time, as I now plan on building a custom version of my own.

In the meantime, progress is being made on the backdate of the dashboard, and I thought some pictures were in order.

Any thoughts or input are welcome. I'll try and update this thread more frequently if there is any interest in this project.

Can i just ask for some clarification - that first pic of what you bought from ebay doesn't look much like what you fixed to the dash - presumably you recovered it first? if so where did you get the material

Thanks guys, the amount of hours this is consuming has come as a big surprise to me, but it's rewarding beyond belief.

Sladey, I blame you for all of this, your car got me started down the backdate path.

To answer your question, the aluminum backing plate gets adhered to the dash, and then there are pre-cut pieces of steel which you are intended to attach vinyl basketweave material to first, and then attach that to the aluminum you've mounted to the dash. The vinyl is available from Pelican Parts here in the US, and comes in a roll 6 feet by 9 inches. Here's the link;

Thanks Mike - I'm glad my obsession is starting to hit your bank balance like it hit mine

So if I can just get this straight - you wrap the basket-weave around the steel bit and glue it down, wrapping it over the edge. The wrapped steel is then fixed (glued?) to the aluminium (aloominum) strim pieces which are in turn fixed onto the dash (studs and nuts?)

Damn close Mark. The aluminum is attached to the dash with 2-sided adhesive tape. That is also how the steel is attached to the aluminum. The vinyl is glued (3M #90 vinyl adhesive which was left over from the new carpets).

By the way, my wife would like a word with you about our overdraft....
