Re: Best protection options

A local paint supplier does the tintable ProXL ToughOx underseal (bedliner). You can order it online of course, but you need a RAL code for the colour and I could not find a decent match. On the phone, the chap told me that I can get the aerosol (2k) version tinted in-store from a sample of my origi...

Re: Best protection options

Spent a bit of time experimenting with an underseal gun yesterday, to see if and how I might achieve a similar finish to that under the car. Thought I would share my findings here. I was spraying U-pol Gravitex outside (temperature about 10 degree C). The gun was a cheap generic one that I purchased...

Re: Caliper condition opinions

Just capping off this thread. I decided to rebuild the caliper with new seals and silicone grease from Big Red. Very pleased with the job. Still miffed that I bizarrely split the caliper and chopped two of the bolts up (that had rounded heads) in the process - these are proving a bit difficult to fi...

Re: Targa Top refurb

Southbound Restoration are the most experienced top builder and supplier of parts and materials, and advice, in this country, I think. I don't know any other possibilities in this country. It is reasonably trivial to change the outer skin. But, from personal experience, any additional work is an ext...

Re: Time for a mini rant ! (Insurance for a 1.4 Diesel AX)

I just had renewals on our daily diesel and motorhome with no significant increases on either.

100 mpg sounds a bit unrealistic. Both of my 1.5 dci's can just about stretch to 65 or 70 in summer with a light-footed motorway run, both less than £300 to insure

Re: 911 ignition lock cylinder removal.

This might help, even though it covers 914 http://www.914world.com/specs/rekey.php If its one of the hollow pins, as found on the glovebox lock, I removed one of those easily by inserting a sharp probe, tilting (to grip) and lifting. The website suggests inserting needle-nosed pliars, but my pliars ...

Re: Audi TT, any comments?

Those problems don't sound too bad to me, about half of them service items. I imagined that you must be having engine trouble - I know how that causes one to fall out with a car, having gone through two 996 engines :P I think any other car in that price bracket is a gamble and is going to cost you s...

Re: Lock barrel brass tumblers help

The valet is the number 2. Interesting, the valet tumbler seems to be very different to #2, and #3 and #1, as you can see from my picture. I was assuming that the valet was #4. I did not have any #4 in my door locks, so I have no real reference point. I found some valet tumblers (with the 'step') i...

Re: Caliper condition opinions

It seems that new replacement calipers are widely available and quite cheap, starting from £55 each or £105 for a pair of rear's on Ebay for 69-83 cars. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166157730066?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20201210111314%26meid%3Db...

Re: Caliper condition opinions

Just curious as to what grease you are thinking of and where you put it? I watched a couple of Youtube videos specifically on 911 caliper rebuilds, which demonstrated smearing the grease on the inside of the piston cylinder walls. Planned to purchase a 'Big Red' seal kit that included the grease, w...

Re: Caliper condition opinions

Really appreciate all of the advice. I noticed from pics that the new Big Red pistons were hollow and wondered about their compatibility with the caliper pins - I thought perhaps new pistons might simply fit over the pins anyway (and the pins would become redundant) but it sounds like this might not...

Can you identify these bits please?

Can anyone identify these bits from my car please (I am pretty sure that these came off of my car, but I have tinkered with a lot of cars since then so possibly not or not original)? The cup washer is 30 mm diameter. I have a feeling that it was used on my front wings, perhaps to hold the flange to ...

Caliper condition opinions

After soaking in WD40 and some coaxing with a C clamp and block of wood, I managed to remove the pistons from a stuck rear brake caliper with an air gun. Can anyone say for certain from my photos whether the caliper and-or pistons need to be replaced, or can be re-used once greased up properly with ...
