Re: another 73T Targa restoration thread

So... it turned out that looked like a wonderful paint job under a cloudy sky and in the garage, turned out to be extremely poor in the sun. The highly polished clear coat and metallic flake were hiding sanding scratches and a cloudy colour coat, plus a large number of dust nibs. The painter didn't ...

Re: Door top mouldings for Targa - ally or brass?

d911 replied to my 'return' request email today, including telling me that 'we feel our current description to be suitable' but they will pass my comments onto their product manager for further review. Sad really, when they cannot understand the significant difference between chrome and satin alumin...

Re: Outer sill top edge... cut off to replace sill?

Just a small clarification, the three layers only exist in the vertical part of the door seal flange - see my sketch below. The inner sill stops just before the jack socket reinforcement, then the inner rear quarter starts. A similar 3-layer setup then exists with inner rear quarter on the inside, t...

Re: Outer sill top edge... cut off to replace sill?

I removed both of my outer sills. The second one went better than the first, and I learned a few important lessons. As the other chap said, its quite a big job, but more time-consuming than difficult. I think you are talking about tackling the spot welds inside the door seal channel. If so, here is ...

Re: Any tips for 915 gearbox end cover swap

Brilliant, thanks Gary! I don't see any obvious circlips or anything holding the speedo gear, so will blast with brake cleaner as you suggested. I have a feeling that it will be quite audible otherwise...

Re: Any tips for 915 gearbox end cover swap

This is my current gearbox end, with broken speedo cable housing (bottom left). Not sure what the top right plug is for.... any function, or just a plug?

Any tips for 915 gearbox end cover swap

Hello (again), Todays job was supposed to be swapping my 915 gearbox end cover, but I noticed that one of the four mounting studs was missing (thread is OK). In any case, I thought it better to pause and ask for advice before cracking her open..... Haynes manual is not very useful for this job. Any ...

Re: Door top mouldings for Targa - ally or brass?

As was suggested below, it looks like the aluminium mouldings are the only ones available as new, and are being incorrectly described as chrome everywhere one looks. Just because just about everyone refers to them as chrome, doesn't make it true! This is how it was described on d911: Door outer moul...

Re: Boxster Insurance renewal increase!

That's the plan (UPDATE: did a Gocompare and found it for £330 with Flow Insurance (underwritten by LV, and with an LV email address), £200 cheaper than my LV renewal quote!! I recall that I left LV a few years ago too for the same reason, but then they came up competitive again a year or three ago....

Re: Boxster Insurance renewal increase!

Just got renewal notice from LV Insurance for our C5 Aircross, up from 300 to 530, incl. multi-car discount and NCB protection (nothing else), a 76 % increase! Plus 9% for paying monthly.

Just the day before, I received this note from them

Re: Door top mouldings for Targa - ally or brass?

Thanks for sharing your insight. On further inspection, all of the the 911 door mouldings on the d911 website are referred to as being 'chrome' or 'black'. Clearly, satin aluminium should not be referred to as chrome - this is just misleading! Technically speaking, to avoid confusion, the black vers...

Re: USA 1970 911T - the Tangerine Dream

I would say, if its falling to bits, hidden anyway and not ridiculously expensive to replace, do so, otherwise reuse as much as you can. Grubby carpets won't look nice, and in my experience don't clean up sufficiently well or dye easily by hand. I popped mine in the washing machine on low temp short...

Door top mouldings for Targa - ally or brass?

Can anyone validate, or otherwise, my assertion that the door-top mouldings for all long-nose Targa's were all (heavy) bright chrome-plated brass, and were never ever ever ever supplied as satin finished aluminium please? Same goes for the subsequent impact bumper Targa's and cabrio's - they were we...

Thanks everyone for the kind offers! I'll get everything fitted some time after Xmas and take stock from that point, but most likely end up buying the knock off Sealey bleeder look-alike....
