I have all mine off at the moment (it's an '84) and it should be doable with a bit of care and compression. Getting the roll pin out the bottom could be the tricky bit. If you can remove the top nut, pull down to compress, I was able to get the top of the strut clear without catching the wheel arch,...

I am stripping my tank at the moment and the rubbery stuff is the colour you describe. Mine is an 84 car and black, so I think it might just be the colour of the coating they used.

Hi Boomy, I put some on my 3.2 last year, pretty easy in the end. Got it lined up and used masking tape along the top edge to hold in place first. then used a spray of water with a drop of fairy liquid on the bodywork to allow it to be slid if needed.
