Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Being an idiot I washed the head numbers off three of the heads before I scratched them in, so that's made an extra measuring job for me, which I'm not well equipped to do. Might mean buying another tool. I measured the cylinder shims, all 0.25mm but I only have cylinders 2, 4, 6 numbered. I assume ...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I think I have all the old bits of piston out now... although I've not yet brushed out all the little hols etc. Dirty fingers for scale. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240520/70ce38557c9267e98d16e3e97001f66c.jpg An entire weekend of cleaning this weekend... with a little break to fix a leaky sho...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

You can always go the whole hog with suffle pins and such like, but the oil bypass mod and piston squirters I think are the right changes to have done if not already there. I spoke with headshop in the week, who did your heads. They're of the view a line bore is generally advisable. Another gentlem...

Re: What's a safe redline for a 2.2 with stock components?

There are so many variables here. Is the engine built? If so the usual test is to hold the revs at 6000 for 20 seconds, then increase it by 100rpm, hold it for 20 seconds, increase it by 100 rpm, hold it for 20 seconds etc etc. When it blows up you’ll have established the safe limit was the one bef...

Re: ideal port size for a 2.2 with mod solex cams?

. Are you planning on retaining the mfi or switching to carbs ? . It's going to depend on the cost of re-camming the MFI. I have a set of Webers already but I'd like the better atomisation of fuel injection, of course. And MFI is part of the legend of these old engines. But my pockets have finite d...

What's a safe redline for a 2.2 with stock components?

What's a relatively safe redline for a 2.2 with stock (counterweighted) crank, valves, springs etc.? I'm assuming here the cam, compression, fuelling etc. are set up to keep pulling to whatever range it needs to go to. At what point to things start flying off, not getting the oil they need, hitting ...

ideal port size for a 2.2 with mod solex cams?

Hi, my current plan is to take my 2.2E engine up to 86mm barrels and mod solex (DC30) cams with the intention of getting a bit more high-revving top end pull, but without losing too much in the way of mid-range driveability. As I undertand it, these are somewhere between E and S, with some modern im...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Just my 2d worth: When I did my 2.4 T/S engine in '92, Bob Watson said leave the studs alone. Mag case '7R' . The studs etc were all stock and looked good, and I think that make the decision. If your studs look corroded and the head threads look damaged etc then i would be tempted to time sert if y...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

No progress this past couple of weeks, as the good weather has had me doing other things. But to catch up on some more of the dismantling... the cams are in great health, which is bitter sweet in a way because they'll be off to Newman cams for a mod solex grind, which is the direction I think I'm go...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

I think checking manifold temps was good advice. The more you can narrow down the possibilities, the less guesswork is required. Then I'd probably clip a timing light on each spark plug wire. Soon you'll know which cylinders are affected and whether it's fuel or spark. Sent from my SM-S918B using Ta...

Or even just an original lever / trigger. Bought an aftermarket one but I can’t get it to work. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Hi Ant. You can try one of my spare 1988 handles with the trigger you've bought if you want. You never know, the trigger might suit the later handle. Rob Sent f...

Is that a Morgan behind it and if so, I wonder where it is and what it would sell for today?

....as I've always said with these projects you learn on the job and I came to realise that not all short rear trailing arms are the same. The arms I had purchased, as with all short trailing currently available as far as I am aware, are those designed to work with coil overs as per the RSR. The ar...
