Re: Carrera 3.2 G50 drivetrain slack

It sounds like the rubber damper (part of the clutch friction lining) has failed. When this happens there is a lot of drive train back lash and it feels like it's coming from the gearbox. To properly identify the problem the engine box & need to come out and the clutch pressure plate removed. H...

Caffeine and Machine air-cooled evening on September 22nd

https://helmtickets.com/events/6904/air-cooled-appreciation-society?slot=17246 £10 per vehicle, including all occupants. You can sit outside, admire the cars, and feed and water a family for about £50. Not sure if I'll have an air-cooled car on the road by then but I've bought a ticket and I'll do m...

Re: Carrera 3.2 G50 drivetrain slack

My G50 box still feels tight after 320k miles. My first thought was engine/gearbox mounts. I replaced my gearbox mounts with super pro ones and was surprised at the difference - the originals had got sloppy and I’d got used to it Same here but upon jacking it up, it's definitely driveshaft rotation...

Re: 1970T - common speedo fails?

The gauge rings are crimped on and once removed the glass just falls out. It’s easy to get them off with a little patience. You work round from the rear prying a little bit at a time. A small screwdriver will do the job but you can get pry tools for not much money which will make it easier and less...

Re: 1970T - common speedo fails?

Yes you should be able to pull the spedoup from the dash the cable is long enough to move it up to unscrew it disconect the bulbs note where they go! and just about get the spedo out. It does indeed just pull out. Is it easy to access the needle / face for cleaning etc. e.g. by removing the glass? ...

Re: Carrera 3.2 G50 drivetrain slack

Other options Check that you hub nuts are tight, what about play in a CV joint. Jack each rear wheel up at a time, put the car in gear and see if thee is the same play each side. Are the output shafts bolted up tight into the diff? Right, I've done that. If I ignore around 0.75 degrees of play in t...

How would you recommend installing a2.2T oil pressure gauge?

My 1970 2.2T only has an oil warning light and no gauge. I think the sender for that's near the front of the engine with the green and red cable shown in the second of these photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/8EJrN6WvNoxH3bC1A If I wanted an oil gauge just to monitor overall engine health and prevent...

CV joints are all done up tight. Both shafts leaving the diff have a little slack, say 3 degrees or 3mm movement. Not totally clear whether it's lateral or rotational. I wonder if this is normal on a G50?

Also let me know if price is way off as I have no idea other than the fact a new one is four times that - I'm just trying to recoup the cost of a new engine lid.

H1 lamp parts?

Does anyone know a source for H1 headlamp parts? I need the little rubber grommets that hold everything in place, the spade-shaped steel inserts that go into them, and one of the long flexible screws that doubles back on itself to adjust one of the beams. I don't think the diagram here even shows th...

Re: 1970T - common speedo fails?

I think you can just pull the Speedo towards you but the cable, from the gearbox, will prevent you moving it too much. However, on my 912, I think the 911 is the same, I think you access the back of the gauges from the bonnet? You might have it lift up some carpet to see them Sent from my M2004J19C...

Carrera 3.2 G50 drivetrain slack

I have significant drivetrain slack in the Carrera 3.2 G50 - i.e. if I was to repeatedly accelerate/decelerate on the throttle it would feel like I might break something. My instant assumption was engine / gearbox mountings but I saw some chatter about this possibly being wear in some aspect of the ...

Re: Are 1970 seatbelt captive nuts useless?

This pic shows the captive nut in service: https://photos.app.goo.gl/WXjsiHeSHsCGFrTZ7 That should be fine as the retractor is low down and you have a running loop high up on the B post. The mounting for thr retractor reel is not a regular feature of a 1970 MY car. They were welded in under the pai...
